WVU Just Got A Secondary Boost Fans Needed Before Cincinnati

WVU fans eagerly await the latest news on cornerback Nick Taylor's playing status as the Mountaineers gear up for their next match against Cincinnati.

West Virginia got a favorable update late Thursday night ahead of Saturday’s matchup with Cincinnati, and the biggest name attached to it is cornerback Nick Taylor.

Taylor, who missed last week’s game against Arizona, moved from doubtful to questionable on the Mountaineers’ latest availability report. That gives him a real shot to suit up, and it matters because West Virginia could use his presence in more ways than one.

The Mountaineers also cleared out all five players who had been listed as probable. RB Lawrence Autry, WR John Neider, EDGE Harper Holloman, LB Ashton Woods, and S Matt Sieg were all removed from the report, which means they’re good to go.

There was more movement elsewhere on the list as well. RB Andre Devine, RB Chris Talley, WR Armoni Weaver-Bomar, N/S Emory Snyder, DL Darius Wiley, S Da’Mare Williams, TE DaMari Witherspoon, OT Aiden Pastoriza, and S D’Angelo Hutchinson were all included on the update.

Taylor’s value goes beyond just coverage, especially with Cincinnati expected to lean hard on the run. He’s the kind of defender West Virginia can trust to do the dirty work on the edge, take on blocks, and free up teammates to make plays. He has no issue crashing into a blocker on the perimeter so another defensive back can get to the ball without having to fight through traffic first.

If Taylor isn’t able to play, West Virginia may have to keep experimenting at corner opposite Chams Diange. Jason Chambers has gotten plenty of work there over the last two weeks, though the results have been uneven.

Keyshawn Robinson has also been mixed in, but he’s still searching for a bigger breakthrough. The Mountaineers have also shuffled pieces around in the back end, and there’s a chance a converted safety could end up starting there if Taylor can’t go.

West Virginia and Cincinnati will release their next availability report tonight at 10 p.m. ET.

The teams are scheduled to kick off in Morgantown at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday.

West Virginia's Defense Just Put More Pressure On Cincinnati Showdown

Phil Steele sees plenty of offense looming when West Virginia heads into its matchup with Cincinnati, and the concern starts on the defensive side for the Mountaineers. Both teams bring strong running games into the game, which is why Steele expects the total to climb past 62.5 and why this feels like the kind of Big 12 meeting where possession control and tackling discipline could matter almost as much as explosive plays.

For West Virginia, the challenge is making sure its own attack can keep pace if the game turns into a shootout. Steele pointed to Cam Cook and Michael Hawkins as important pieces for the Mountaineers, and their production could become even more valuable if Cincinnati is able to lean on the ground game and keep the pressure on West Virginia's defense throughout the night. Pat McAfees Next ESPN Deal Could Change His Place In Sports Media

Pat McAfee has already carved out a rare lane for himself in sports media, turning a former NFL punters platform into a full-scale broadcasting empire. The West Virginia native currently makes about $30 million a year from ESPN for his show and other network work, a number that already reflects just how central he has become to the companys daily sports conversation.

Now McAfee is in extension talks with ESPN, and the reported figures are eye-opening. Offers have been floated in the $60 million to $65 million range annually, which would put him atop the networks pay scale and further underscore how far his career has traveled from the field to the center of sports entertainment, after earlier deals with FanDuel and DraftKings helped build the brand he now carries. WVU Faces A Pressure Game As Its Season Starts To Slip

West Virginia heads into Saturdays Big 12 matchup at Milan Puskar Stadium trying to stop the slide before it becomes a deeper problem. The Mountaineers have dropped three straight overall, even though they are still 3-0 in conference play, and the timing is less than ideal with Cincinnati coming in on the heels of a strong start to the season and a week off to reset.

The matchup brings some recent history into play, too, with West Virginia riding a four-game winning streak against the Bearcats. Cincinnati opened 4-0 before losing its last game before the open week, so both teams arrive with something to prove. For the Mountaineers, the bigger question is whether they can steady themselves in league play and protect their place near the top of the conference race before the pressure starts to build even more.
