West Virginia’s season opener took a troubling turn Saturday when defensive lineman Darius Wiley was carted off the field against Coastal Carolina.
The injury happened on a play in which the Mountaineers had forced a fumble, and Wiley did not get up after going down. Staff members appeared to place an air cast on him before he was taken off the field. The extent of the injury was not immediately known.
Wiley’s exit is a major concern for West Virginia because he came into the 2026 season as one of the more intriguing additions to the defensive front. The 6-foot-6, 268-pound redshirt sophomore arrived in Morgantown after a huge year at Hutchinson Community College, where he put together a résumé that made him hard to miss.
In 2025, Wiley earned First-Team NJCAA Division I All-American honors and was named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He was a force for the Blue Dragons, finishing with 20 tackles for loss, nine sacks and 57 total tackles while helping Hutchinson go 11-1 and reach the NJCAA national championship game. That production came on one of the nation’s top junior college defenses.
West Virginia added Wiley as part of Rich Rodriguez’s push to strengthen the defense heading into his second season back in Morgantown.
For now, the focus is on Wiley’s health. There was no official diagnosis available right after the injury, and the Mountaineers are expected to share more after the game.
