West Virginia Leans on Huff as Big 12 Challenge Approaches

As Big 12 play approaches, West Virginias offense is finding its identity-with Honor Huff at the center of the conversation.

West Virginia’s offense has found its engine-and its backup generator-in Honor Huff. Through 13 non-conference games, Huff hasn’t just been the Mountaineers’ go-to scorer; he’s also been their most reliable secondary option. That’s both a testament to his consistency and a subtle signal that WVU is still searching for a more balanced offensive identity.

Let’s break it down. Huff led the team in scoring in six of those 13 games, averaging a strong 21.5 points in those outings.

But even when he wasn’t the top scorer, he wasn’t far behind-he finished second on the team in scoring five more times, averaging 16.8 points in those games. That kind of production, night in and night out, is rare.

It shows a player who can carry the load when needed and still impact the game when others step up.

What’s interesting is how the season unfolded. West Virginia opened the year with a rotating cast of leading scorers-five different players topped the box score in the first five games, and seven different leaders emerged in the first eight.

That early unpredictability might have been a sign of a team still figuring itself out. But then Huff started to take control.

Over a four-game stretch, he either shared top honors or outright led the team in scoring, solidifying his role as the offensive focal point.

Even in Monday night’s 86-51 win over Mississippi Valley State, where Huff took a bit of a step back, he was still right in the mix. Treysen Eaglestaff took the spotlight with 23 points, and Huff slid into the second-scorer role once again-proving he doesn’t need to dominate the ball to make an impact.

What WVU has in Huff is more than just a volume scorer. He’s a steady hand in a lineup that’s still evolving, a player who can adapt to the flow of the game and still find ways to put points on the board. As the Mountaineers head into conference play, having that kind of offensive anchor is going to be crucial-especially if others can start matching his consistency.
