Rich Rodriguez came away from West Virginia’s win over No. 25 UVA with plenty to like, but the biggest takeaway was simple: his team finished.
Rodriguez pointed first to the way WVU closed things out, leaning on the ground game when it mattered most.
“Proud of especially how we closed it out at the end of the game with how we ran the ball when we needed to..... it's a win against a ranked team that we have a lot of respect for.”
He also liked how his defense settled in after a rough opening stretch. Rodriguez said the unit never lost its composure, even when UVA landed some early shots.
“They were never panicked. Coach Alley and the defensive staff made a few adjustments here and there..... it's hard to trick those o-line guys with five or six or seven years of experience. Our guys stayed in there, and they made some really key stops when we took the momentum over.”
Rodriguez said he was actually the one feeling the pressure more than the players while the defense worked through those early issues.
“They hit us on some stuff, on some big runs. There was no panic.
I was probably panicking more than the players were because I wanted to get some more three and outs. Even when they were getting a few plays, there was no panic.”
The offense had its own bright spots, starting with Michael Hawkins. Rodriguez called him a player with a lot of upside and said the growth is already showing.
“Mike is a dynamic player. I think he's going to keep getting better.
This is only his third game in the system.... I think he grew a lot, and our offense grew a lot in certain moments.
Mike is electric. He showed today that he's got a lot of really good football in front of him, too.”
Jaden Bray also gave WVU the kind of explosive plays Rodriguez was looking for.
“Bray had two of them. One really big one.
It's good to have him. He's our most explosive one.
He's strong.”
Up front, Rodriguez said the offensive line is still a work in progress, but he liked the way the group handled a defense that forced them to adjust on the fly.
“We're still figuring it out, too, as a group. That offensive line has only played together in three games.
They've practiced a lot together and Coach Trickett does a great job. They saw some things today that they haven't seen before....
I think the thing that was great that we were able to run it when everyone knew we were going to run it.”
Rodriguez also singled out DJ Epps, praising the kind of edge and versatility he brings to the slot.
“He's such a competitive guy. He walked on at Troy.
Winded up being All-Conference there. He plays and practices every day like he has something to prove.
He has great ball skills and plays a lot of football. He's perfect for us in the slot because he'll block, but he has a knack for getting open.
He'll make some contested catches, and that was key for us today.”
And when it came to containing the quarterback, Rodriguez said WVU did a better job overall, even if there were a few breakdowns along the way.
“A lot better today containment wise. There were a couple times we lost it.... but we did a much better job of that, and we rallied on some of his scrambles.”
