Just before West Virginia opens its 2026 season against Coastal Carolina, the Mountaineers will put Pat White in a class all his own. The program is set to retire the jersey of one of its greatest quarterbacks, making White just the 7th football player in school history to receive that honor.
There will still be a No. 5 on the field this season, worn by senior wideout Jaden Bray. White has given him permission to wear it. But on this day, the number will belong to White alone at Milan Puskar Stadium.
That kind of recognition fits the career White built in Morgantown, one big moment after another. His rise really took off when Louisville defender Elvis Dumervil injured WVU starting QB Adam Bednarik, opening the door for White to lead the Mountaineers to an incredible triple-overtime win over the Cardinals. From there, he became one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
One of White’s most dazzling runs came against USF, and it stands out as the single most impressive run of his collegiate career in the source’s view. The play-action fake had even the cameraman fooled for a moment, and by the time the shot caught up, White was already in the open field. He then slipped around at least five USF defenders inside the 20-yard line and reached the goal line with a play that mixed speed, jukes, and distance.

Instead, the Mountaineers jumped to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, with White and Steve Slaton racing past the Bulldogs for much of the night. White finished with 120 passing yards, a touchdown, and 77 rushing yards.
The Backyard Brawl gave White another huge showcase. In the 99th edition at Heinz Field, he piled up 424 total yards of offense to help West Virginia win.
Slaton was huge too, rushing for 215 yards, and the two teammates each topping 200 rushing yards in the same game remains a rare feat in college football history. The source notes that it has happened only seven times ever.

Then came a night when Greg Robinson’s plan unraveled fast. Robinson’s focus was on stopping Slaton, but that left White with room to work all game long.
White turned it into a massive outing, rushing 15 times for 247 yards and four touchdowns. He added 99 passing yards while West Virginia put up 41 points on the Orangemen, making it an all-time Pat White moment.
White’s bowl résumé was just as loaded. After West Virginia missed out on a chance to play for a national title and then lost its head coach shortly afterward, he still delivered in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, leading a 48-28 win over Oklahoma.
White ran for 150 yards and threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns. After the game, he backed Bill Stewart to become WVU’s next head coach.
He later added another piece of history in the 2008 Meineke Car Bowl. White threw for a career-high 332 yards and three touchdowns in the win, earning Bowl Game MVP honors. For a state with no major professional sports teams, West Virginia football carries enormous weight, and White became the face of the program’s “glory days.” After 18 years and a few rule changes, his number is finally being immortalized.
