The Steelers got a little more clarity on Joey Porter Jr. this week, but not a full answer.
Head coach Mike McCarthy said Porter Jr. will be evaluated on Wednesday as Pittsburgh starts turning its attention to a Week 3 meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals. Porter Jr. has already missed the Steelers’ first two games, and his status has been tied to both a back injury and an “NIR/conditioning” designation ahead of the Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots.
“Joey's in this situation where he had a back thing that flared up in practice, and we're taking a look at it. He'll be evaluated on Wednesday and see what he can do in practice come Wednesday,” McCarthy said.
Porter Jr., 26, has been dealing with the back issue since training camp, which is what put him on the PUP list in the first place. His contract situation has also hovered over the story, with no new deal in place, but McCarthy’s latest update points back to the injury as the immediate issue. The coach said the back flared up in practice last week, and that lines up with Porter Jr. leaving practice with a trainer on September 17.
There had been some hope after Pittsburgh’s Week 1 win over the Atlanta Falcons that Porter Jr. was headed toward a bigger role in practice. That didn’t happen. Instead, he remained limited all last week, just as he had been leading into the season opener.
That leaves his Week 3 availability in the air for now, even with the Bengals coming to Acrisure Stadium. The matchup brings Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins into the picture, so Porter Jr.’s practice participation over the next few days should say plenty about whether he can go.
There also does not appear to be any contract resolution coming soon. The Steelers are not negotiating in-season, so an extension is off the table for now.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Porter Jr. has considered getting a second opinion on his back. Schefter also said the Steelers are planning on him to “potentially return” vs. Cincinnati, though that still does not guarantee he’ll be active if the injury keeps him sidelined.
CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson reported before the Patriots game that someone in the organization told her Porter Jr. had been cleared of his back injury and is “expected to be in good enough football shape,” with the final call on suiting up left to him.
For Pittsburgh, the situation can’t keep hanging around much longer. Whether Porter Jr. is available in Week 3 or not, the Steelers need some kind of resolution soon.

WVUs First Big 12 Depth Chart Raises A Real QB Question
West Virginias first Big 12 depth chart of the season arrived with a notable wrinkle at the most important position, as Michael Hawkins Jr. and Scotty Fox Jr. were listed as co-starters for the upcoming game against Oklahoma State. The rest of the chart filled in the usual pieces around them, with the Mountaineers also sorting out their top options at running back, in the secondary and at linebacker as they head into conference play.
The co-starter designation makes the quarterback picture the main thing to watch, especially with the opener against the Cowboys setting an early tone for how West Virginia wants to handle the position. Elsewhere on the two-deep, players such as David Afogho and Isaiah Patterson landed prominent spots after recent performances, a sign that the staff is still sorting out who has earned the most trust as the games start to count for real. WVU Secondary Just Got Intriguing With JaCorey Thomas In The Mix
A new wrinkle has emerged for West Virginias secondary with JaCorey Thomas now cleared to be eligible for the 2026 collegiate football season, which would be his fifth and final year. The former Georgia defensive back recently committed to WVU, and even before he appears on the schools official roster, he is already part of the conversation because of the veteran presence he can bring to a defense looking for stability and experience.
For the Mountaineers, the appeal is obvious: Thomas offers depth, maturity and another proven body in the defensive backfield at a time when every available piece matters. What remains less clear is how quickly he can factor in, including whether he will be available for the upcoming game against Oklahoma State, leaving one more question hanging as West Virginia keeps sorting out its secondary. WVU Just Added A New Back To An Already Crowded Rotation
West Virginias 2026 roster keeps getting deeper under Rich Rodriguez, and the latest addition comes from a well-traveled backfield. Former Utah running back NaQuari Rogers is joining the Mountaineers after also spending time at Campbell and New Mexico, giving the program another experienced option as it continues to stockpile talent for the future.
Rogers path to Morgantown included a legal step along the way, with a preliminary injunction in Indiana clearing the way for his transfer. What remains up in the air is when he will actually be available for games, leaving West Virginia with one more piece in place but still waiting on the timing of his on-field debut. [Read more 🡒]
