Wizards Veteran Could Be Caught In A Trade Race Fans Should Watch

With Steph Curry's championship window narrowing, the Warriors might make a bold move to acquire a seasoned NBA champion, potentially reshaping their future.

The Golden State Warriors are looking at a roster that already feels tight, and the injury picture hasn’t helped. Jimmy Butler is sidelined, Kristaps Porziņģis is now dealing with sudden health issues, and what once looked like a promising offseason has turned into a more urgent search for help.

That’s why one name keeps coming up: Anthony Davis.

Golden State spent part of the summer chasing big swings, including LeBron James and Davis. As ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported, “The Golden State Warriors are planning a pursuit of LeBron James in free agency and Anthony Davis via trade this week, league sources told ESPN's Shams Charania, opening up the flexibility for such a possibility after Draymond Green declined his $27.6 million player option Monday morning,”

The LeBron path didn’t happen, and the Davis chase never came together either. But according to The Athletic’s Josh Robbins, Davis’ agent Rich Paul could still be working the market as the season moves along.

“But Davis’ agent, Rich Paul, is one of the game’s most powerful player representatives, and he has proven skilled at securing the deals his high-profile clients want, in the cities where they want to be. There’s little doubt that Paul already has gamed out other teams’ interest in Davis and will continue to do so as February’s trade deadline approaches,” Robbins wrote.

CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn sees Golden State as the most obvious destination if Davis becomes available. “The Wizards reportedly plan to wait until the middle of the season to reopen extension negotiations, but if Davis plays well and stays healthy, there will be a market to flip him by February. Golden State is the obvious one, especially with Kristaps Porziņģis already dealing with a medical issue,” Quinn wrote.

A deal would not come cheap. The Warriors would have to send out a serious package to get Davis, but that kind of move could fit their timeline if they want to keep some flexibility for next offseason. It would also give Curry another high-level running mate.

And on the floor, the fit is hard to ignore. Pairing Davis with Draymond Green would give Golden State a nasty defensive backbone, one that could make life miserable for opposing offenses. It still feels like a long shot, but with Curry’s championship window narrowing, the Warriors could keep swinging for something big.

Wizards Still Have One Painful Regret From The Poole Trade

The Wizards offseason overhaul did more than change the look of their roster, it helped set up a later move for Trae Young. Washington sent out Jordan Poole and Saddiq Bey in the deal that brought back CJ McCollum and Kelly Olynyk, and while the front office got the flexibility it wanted, the transaction now carries an obvious reminder of what else left with it.

Bey was treated as a throw-in at the time, but he quickly proved he could still be useful in New Orleans, giving the Pelicans another wing who could help in a variety of ways. He has since secured a long-term payday there, which only sharpens the sense that Washington may have given up more than it realized if he had stayed in the picture. [Read more 🡒]

Wizards Fans Should Love How Big AJ Dybantsa Is Thinking

AJ Dybantsa has only just arrived in Washington, but the rookie is already thinking on a scale that fits the leagues biggest names. The early preseason returns were encouraging enough to understand why, with flashes of activity on both ends and enough playmaking and defensive disruption to hint at a player who is not afraid of the moment, even while the shot still comes and goes.

What makes Dybantsa stand out, though, is the ambition behind it all. He has made it clear he wants his career to reach the kind of heights reserved for the sports all-time greats, which is the sort of mindset Wizards fans can rally behind even before the results fully catch up. For a franchise looking for its next cornerstone, that kind of confidence is at least as important as any box score. [Read more 🡒]

How A Former Suns Coach Is Shaping The Wizards Top Pick

Kevin Youngs path from Phoenix to BYU has already left a mark on A.J. Dybantsa, and the connection matters now that the forward is the Washington Wizards top pick. Young, who spent time as an assistant with the Suns, brought schemes and drills from that NBA stop into Dybantsas development, with an eye toward shaping a prospect who could handle the same kind of pro-level demands that stars like Kevin Durant and Devin Booker face every night.

The early returns have been encouraging for Washington, which has seen Dybantsa flash in preseason with a well-rounded game and a feel that suggests he can contribute right away. Still, the picture is not finished yet, and the next step is obvious: his outside shot and free-throw work remain the clearest places where the Wizards will want to see growth before the long season really takes hold.
