Anthony Davis didn’t exactly shut the door on a LeBron James reunion in Washington.
During a recent conversation with a Wizards fan, Davis added fuel to the speculation by acknowledging that he and James have talked about the possibility of ending up together again in the nation’s capital. He didn’t spell out what those conversations looked like, but he also didn’t dismiss the idea.
“Maybe,” said Davis on LeBron James to D.C. “We’ve had some conversations.”
That alone was enough to get people talking, especially with the Wizards suddenly looking a little more interesting after the trades for Trae Young and Davis. Washington still projects as a lower-level playoff team this season, but the idea of adding another proven star would obviously change the conversation in a hurry.
Davis and James spent seven seasons together with the Lakers and formed one of the league’s most dangerous pairings. Their run peaked in 2020, when they helped Los Angeles win its first championship in 10 years. The two became close during that stretch, and the relationship is still alive now.
For Davis, the move to Washington offers another reset after a rough stretch. He was dealt to Dallas in February of 2025 as part of the Luka Doncic trade, a stunning breakup that ended his run with James. Since then, injuries have made it hard for Davis to stay on the floor, and now he’s trying to make the most of a fresh start with the Wizards.
If James ever did decide to join him, the fit would be obvious. At 41, he’d still bring plenty to the table, both on the court and in the locker room. He could help guide young players like Alex Sarr, AJ Dybantsa, Kyshawn George, and Bilal Coulibaly while also giving Washington a real shot to climb into serious playoff contention in the East.
The comparison to Michael Jordan’s stint with the Wizards in the early 2000s is hard to miss. That chapter came well after his peak, but it still gave Washington a spotlight it had rarely seen. The difference now is that the current Wizards are in a much better place than that team was, at least on paper.
Still, nobody should mistake Davis’s comments for a sign that James is headed to D.C. The Wizards may have improved, but they probably don’t meet the standard James usually sets for his next stop.
Davis helps their case, sure, but the likelier landing spots for the four-time champion are the Cavaliers, Heat, 76ers, or Warriors. Unless Washington pulls off something extraordinary, it’s probably not in the mix - even if the idea has already started to circulate.
