The Washington Wizards may be eyeing a guard, but the fit is raising more eyebrows than excitement.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Washington has shown interest in free agent guard Gabe Vincent, a name that doesn’t line up neatly with the team’s most obvious roster issue. The Wizards entered the offseason with one major hole to patch in the frontcourt behind Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr, and they still have ways to address it either in free agency or through the trade market. For now, though, the team appears comfortable waiting.
That patience is getting more interesting by the day, because the open market is thinning out at backup center. Instead of moving toward that need, Washington is reportedly looking at a player who would add another layer to an already crowded backcourt picture.
The Wizards’ roster has become deep enough that Brian Keefe’s rotation choices could be a real puzzle. With Trae Young and AD expected to lead the group next season, along with reigning No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa and a young core that already has plenty of talent, there aren’t many minutes to hand out. Tre Johnson, Will Riley, Bilal Coulibaly, Bub Carrington and Cam Whitmore are all in line to compete for time, and bringing in Vincent only tightens the squeeze.
Vincent is not a useless pickup on paper. His Miami Heat run showed he can handle meaningful minutes when the stage gets bigger. But since leaving South Beach, he hasn’t come close to that level of production, and that’s where the fit starts to wobble.
He’s coming off the worst season of his career, averaging 4.4 points, 1.4 assists and 1.0 rebounds while shooting 35.2% from the field and 34.1% from three. At 30, he also doesn’t really match the Wizards’ timeline. He isn’t the kind of veteran whose experience alone clearly justifies taking up a roster spot, especially with no obvious need for another guard.
A reunion with Russell Westbrook has already been floated in the rumor mill, and even that idea at least comes with a clear reason to see what it could look like on the floor. Vincent, by contrast, would likely be stuck outside the rotation altogether.
That’s what makes Washington’s interest so puzzling: instead of addressing the frontcourt need that has been there all offseason, the Wizards may be looking at a move that doesn’t solve much of anything.
