LeBron James has finally landed with the Philadelphia 76ers, and that alone is enough to set off the kind of trade chatter that never really dies in the NBA. The latest idea floating around is a massive Anthony Davis-Joel Embiid swap, one that would send Embiid to Washington and Davis to Philadelphia.
On paper, the framework is simple: if the 76ers want to honor James’ wish to reunite with Davis, a one-for-one deal of Embiid for Davis works. For Philadelphia, that would be an easy call. For the Wizards, it should be a nonstarter.
Washington already had little reason to entertain moving Davis in the first place. The team’s reluctance to deal him, combined with the weak package options from the teams in the James mix, made the odds of Davis being moved look extremely small. But after Philadelphia’s bold move to acquire Jaylen Brown earlier this offseason and the arrival of new general manager Mike Gansey, the unexpected can’t be completely dismissed.
Even so, the Wizards should not go down this road.
The biggest issue with Embiid is the same one that has followed him for years: health. Philadelphia would be taking on a major question about whether Embiid can hold up long enough for the championship push the roster is built for. Davis has injury concerns too, but the source here makes clear that he still looks like the more dependable option compared with Embiid, whose knees have fueled real questions about whether early retirement could even be on the table.
Embiid’s résumé is still elite. He is a former MVP, and when he’s fully healthy, he remains one of the league’s most dominant big men.
But that “when healthy” part is exactly the problem. He has not been fully healthy in quite some time, and even if the 76ers attached picks to the deal, Washington should not view that as enough to justify making the swap.
It would make the Wizards worse, cut into their own playoff hopes, and force them to pay top dollar for a player whose availability is as shaky as it gets. If Philadelphia believed this was a real option, the deal would likely get done quickly. But unless that changes, Washington has to hold firm and work toward an extension that keeps AD in the DMV for the future.
