The Memphis Grizzlies are in the thick of a tough stretch this season, sitting at 13-15 and clinging to the ninth spot in the Western Conference. With Ja Morant sidelined due to injury, the team has been forced to navigate without its cornerstone - and it's showing. Morant’s absence has not only impacted the Grizzlies’ on-court performance but also stirred up some noise off the court, with trade rumors swirling around the star guard.
In response to their growing list of injuries and the need for frontcourt depth, Memphis made a move to bolster the roster by signing former Lakers and Raptors center Christian Koloko to a 10-day contract under the hardship exception. Koloko, who played 37 games for the Lakers and averaged 2.4 points and 2.5 rebounds, was waived by L.A. back in late November after the team brought in Drew Timme. Now, he gets a fresh opportunity in Memphis, where minutes could be available right away.
The Grizzlies’ most recent matchup came against the Washington Wizards at FedExForum - and while the final score didn’t go their way, there were a few bright spots. Without Morant, Memphis needed someone to step up, and Santi Aldama answered the call in a big way.
The third-year forward turned in a career night, logging 36 minutes and dropping 37 points to go with 10 rebounds and two assists. It was a breakout performance that showcased his versatility and scoring touch, even in a losing effort.
Jaren Jackson Jr. also continued to provide steady production. The former All-Star played 32 minutes, finishing with 22 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. His ability to stretch the floor and protect the rim remains a key asset for Memphis, especially with Morant out.
Another standout was rookie guard Cam Spencer, who put together a well-rounded game in extended minutes. He played 37 minutes and notched a double-double with 19 points and 11 assists, along with four rebounds. Spencer’s poise and playmaking were on full display - and performances like this suggest he’s earning the trust of the coaching staff.
The Grizzlies came out strong, building a 5-point lead in the opening quarter and pushing it to 15 by halftime. But the Wizards flipped the script in the third, seizing momentum and never looking back. Despite the Grizzlies’ early dominance, Washington closed the gap and outpaced Memphis down the stretch, handing them a 130-122 loss.
Next up, Memphis hits the road to face the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Paycom Center. With Morant’s status still uncertain and the team fighting to stay afloat in the playoff picture, every game from here on out carries a little more weight. The addition of Koloko may not be a game-changer, but in a season full of adversity, any help is welcome - and the Grizzlies will need contributions from every corner of the roster if they want to keep pace in a loaded Western Conference.
