The Los Angeles Lakers secured a solid 116-99 victory over the Brooklyn Nets, navigating through a challenging first three quarters. Luka Doncic was in his element, dropping 41 points on an efficient 15-25 shooting night and grabbing eight rebounds. His performance was pivotal in leading the Lakers to this win, though it came with a bit of controversy.
Midway through the third quarter, a heated exchange between Doncic and Nets forward Ziaire Williams resulted in both players receiving technical fouls. The officials, after reviewing the footage, deemed that Doncic initiated contact by pushing Williams, who then retaliated. Given the circumstances, it's unlikely the Lakers can successfully appeal this technical, unlike a previous incident involving the Orlando Magic's Goga Bitadze.
This technical foul marks Doncic's 16th of the season, triggering an automatic one-game suspension. As a result, Doncic will likely miss the Lakers’ upcoming game against the Washington Wizards. This suspension also means he'll forfeit his game check, totaling $317,000, plus an additional $5,000 fine for the technical foul itself.
The NBA imposes a $5,000 fine for each technical foul, and any further infractions this season will cost Doncic the same amount. With eight games remaining, the Lakers will be hoping their star can keep his cool to avoid further suspensions.
Post-game, Doncic addressed the altercation, suggesting that Williams provoked him. “He was yelling in my face - three times.
I just wanted to get out of there,” Doncic explained. “They said I pushed, but it was exaggerated.
I don’t know what else to say.”
Doncic is having an outstanding season, averaging 33.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists. Despite slipping in the MVP rankings, his performance has been nothing short of stellar, leading the league in scoring and maintaining a 13-game streak of 30-point games.
As the playoffs approach, Doncic's technical foul count will reset, with a new fine structure in place. The first two technicals in the playoffs will cost $2,000 each, increasing incrementally, with the seventh resulting in the same $5,000 fine and a suspension.
The Lakers should manage without Doncic against the Wizards, who are struggling with a 17-56 record. With LeBron James and Austin Reaves stepping up, the Lakers are well-positioned to secure a win. Doncic is expected to return for the crucial matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
