AJ Dybantsa Puts Wizards Spotlight Squarely On Cavs Game

After suffering a preseason ankle injury, all eyes are on AJ Dybantsa as he is poised to potentially debut for the Wizards against the Cavaliers, adding to Washington's promising lineup.

Washington’s first four games of the season have come and gone without AJ Dybantsa, but that could change Wednesday night in Cleveland.

The Wizards rookie was listed as questionable on the team’s latest injury report with a left ankle sprain, giving him a shot to make his NBA debut against the Cavaliers at 7 p.m. ET on Monumental Sports Network. Washington is 2-2 entering the game, while Cleveland is 2-1.

Dybantsa, the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, has not played in a regular-season game yet after hurting his ankle in Washington’s preseason finale against the New Orleans Pelicans on Oct. 16.

The injury came in the first quarter when he went up for a midrange jumper. He had to be helped to the locker room and did not return.

Before leaving that game, Dybantsa put up 12 points, two rebounds and one block in 14 minutes. The Wizards still dropped that exhibition 107-106.

His status leaves the door open for a debut, though Washington has not said whether he will be available.

The Wizards will already be shorthanded as they try to recover from Monday’s 110-103 loss to the Charlotte Hornets. Justin Champagnie is out with a right foot injury, Tristan Vukcevic remains sidelined by left hip impingement, and Jamir Watkins is still recovering from left ACL repair surgery.

If Dybantsa does suit up, he would give Washington another scoring threat as the club works to find its rhythm early in the season. The Wizards came into the year with raised expectations after adding Trae Young and Anthony Davis, while also building around Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George and Bub Carrington.

Washington is finishing a two-game road trip in Cleveland, and Dybantsa’s availability will be one of the biggest things to watch closer to tipoff.

Wizards Get A First Real Glimpse Of Their Future In Cleveland

The Wizards head into Cleveland at 2-2, still early enough in the season that every rotation tweak feels like part of the evaluation process. One of those tweaks comes with Justin Champagnie sidelined by a right foot injury, leaving Washington a little thinner as it continues sorting out roles and looking for a steadier rhythm.

More importantly for the franchises bigger picture, AJ Dybantsa is expected to take the floor and give Washington its first real in-game look at the top pick from the recent draft. After sitting out the first four games, his debut adds another layer of intrigue to a trip that already carries some weight for a young roster trying to establish what comes next. [Read more 🡒]

Cavs Face Two Pressure Points In A Big Rocket Arena Test

The Cavaliers and Wizards are set for a 7:00 p.m. ET meeting at Rocket Arena, and the matchup brings a familiar layer of intrigue for Washington beyond the standings. Cleveland has been leaning on Donovan Mitchell and trying to sort through a couple of pressure points, while the Wizards come in with a chance to measure themselves against one of the leagues more complete teams in a building where the margin for error tends to shrink quickly.

For Washington, the frontcourt piece is especially worth watching because Anthony Davis is available and still settling into his role after the deadline deal that brought him to the Wizards last season. Cleveland has its own interior test waiting in Evan Mobley, who has been productive early and has the kind of game that can tilt the night if he gets rolling again. Pair that with Trae Youngs strong start to the season in the broader conversation around the East, and this one has enough star power to feel bigger than a midweek stop on the schedule. Wizards Already Have A Bench Problem They Can't Ignore

The Wizards have opened the season 2-2, but the early takeaway is hard to miss: most of the production is coming from the starting group. Washington has leaned heavily on its first unit to keep games steady, while the reserve minutes have been more of a mixed bag than the coaching staff probably wants this early in the year.

Help may be on the way soon, with AJ Dybantsa expected to make his first appearance against the Cavaliers, giving the second unit a chance to find some rhythm. Even so, the concern lingers because several key bench pieces, including Deandre Ayton, Khris Middleton and Bub Carrington, have been too inconsistent to give the Wizards much margin for error if the starters cool off.
