Washington State's golf team made a strong showing at The Goodwin, with senior Sam Renner leading the charge. Renner fired an impressive 4-under 66 at the Stanford Golf Course, a par-70, 6,742-yard layout, setting the pace for the Cougars in the second round.
The Cougars collectively shot a 3-under 277, marking the fifth-best round among the 30 teams competing. This performance catapulted them six spots up the leaderboard, placing them in sixth at 2-under 558 after 36 holes.
UCLA delivered the standout round of the day with an 8-under 272, tying them with BYU at 12-under for the lead. BYU's own 7-under round keeps them neck-and-neck with UCLA, while Long Beach State and Stanford are just a stroke behind.
New Mexico rounds out the top five at 10-under.
Renner's round was a testament to consistency and skill. Starting on the back nine, he opened with a birdie on No. 10, added two more birdies, and navigated a bogey to sit 2-under after four holes.
Despite bogeys on holes 6 and 8, he made the turn at even par. Renner's second nine was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 first hole, and he closed with two birdies to finish at 4-under 66.
His two-round total of 6-under 134 ties him for fourth overall.
Sophomore Garrett Harrison also impressed, shooting a 1-under 69. Despite a rocky start at 2-over on his front nine, he rallied with three birdies and six pars to climb 42 spots on the leaderboard, now tied for 60th at 3-over 143.
Dylan Burcham, another sophomore, had an eventful day. Starting just one stroke off the lead and tied for second, he turned at 1-under before encountering trouble on his back nine.
A triple bogey on the par-3 third and a bogey on the fifth left him at 4-over with four holes remaining. Burcham managed a birdie on the seventh, finishing at 2-over 72 and 3-under for the tournament, tied for 13th.
Freshman Dylan Boenning began his round on fire with three consecutive birdies. He was 3-under at the turn, but a challenging back nine with a triple bogey, two bogeys, and a birdie saw him end at 1-over 71, tying for 83rd with a 5-over 145 total.
Redshirt-junior Ben Borgida had a rough start with a triple bogey but recovered with four birdies and a bogey to make the turn at even par. His back nine included two birdies and three bogeys, finishing at 1-over 71 and a two-round score of 7-over 147, tied for 107th.
The Cougars' performance at The Goodwin showcases their potential and resilience, setting the stage for an exciting final round.
