Oklahoma Issues Stunning John Mateer Update

Oklahoma QB coach John Kuceyeski sets realistic expectations for John Mateer's mechanical overhaul, stressing patience and gradual improvement.

Oklahoma fans have reason to be optimistic as quarterback John Mateer is set to refine his throwing mechanics, aiming to transition from his side-arm style to a more traditional over-the-top release. However, as OU quarterbacks coach John Kuceyeski pointed out, change won't happen overnight.

During a rare media session amidst the Sooners' spring camp, Kuceyeski shared insights into Mateer's plans for improvement before his senior season kicks off.

"It's not the easiest," Kuceyeski explained. "Everyone wants you to shift from a lower arm angle to a higher one instantly, but that's not realistic.

It's a gradual process. If we can get his arm angle higher more consistently, that’s a win."

Kuceyeski emphasized that while Mateer is working on these adjustments, the transition is gradual. After all, Mateer has been throwing a certain way for over two decades. There will still be moments, especially during RPOs and movement plays, where a side-arm throw might be necessary.

Mateer’s offseason focus on mechanics comes after a 2025 season where his throwing motion often mirrored that of a shortstop rather than a quarterback. This contributed to a completion rate of 62.2%, with 2,885 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Decision-making errors and a thumb injury requiring surgery also played roles in his struggles.

These challenges led Mateer to forgo the 2026 NFL Draft, opting instead to return to Oklahoma for his final season. He candidly admitted that he wasn't ready for the NFL and needed to improve, starting with his mechanics under Kuceyeski's guidance.

As Mateer works on these adjustments, Oklahoma fans can look forward to seeing how these changes might enhance his performance on the field.
