Washington State made a notable staff move for 2027 on Nathan Choate’s baseball team, bringing in Kimble Schuessler as an assistant coach. His role will center on the outfielders, first base, and helping Eric Hutting with the hitting duties. Schuessler steps in for Dan Bower, who departed for Saint Martin’s, where he will serve as recruiting coordinator and infield coach.
Schuessler arrives in Pullman after a year as a graduate assistant at Texas, where he had just wrapped up his playing career in 2025. At Texas, he worked with hitters and infielders while also helping with scouting reports as the Longhorns reached the College World Series.
“We are extremely excited to add Kimble Schuessler to our staff,” Choate said. “Kimble comes from one the most successful programs in the country, and there is no doubt his knowledge and toughness will benefit our players immensely.”
As a player, Schuessler put together a strong career, batting .326 with a .934 OPS. He earned All-Regional honors in the NCAA Tournament in both 2024 and 2025 and was named to the SEC All-Defensive team in 2025. He also comes from the coaching tree of Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle, who has made eight College World Series appearances.
“I am excited for the opportunity to be part of Washington State Baseball and learn from Coach Choate and his staff,” Schuessler said. “They are a great program built on toughness and do an amazing job in developing players on and off the field. I'm looking forward to the journey ahead.”
Washington State also released its full volleyball schedule, and it includes the return of a home multi-team event. The Cougars had long staged a non-conference tournament in Pullman through the Cougar Invitational and Cougar Challenge, but they did not host an MTE in either 2024 or 2025.
That changes Aug. 28-30, when WSU will host Omaha at 6 p.m. on Friday, Montana at 5 p.m. on Saturday, and Central Michigan at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The one drawback is that the event will not line up with a football home weekend, something it had almost always done in the past.
After that, the Cougars head to Eugene for matches against Long Island on Sept. 5 and Oregon on Sept. 6.
They then play Lipscomb, Southern Utah and Washington in Seattle from Sept. 11-13 before closing the non-conference portion of the schedule with two matches against Long Beach State on Sept. 17 and 18, just before the first home football weekend. Pac-12 play opens Sept.
On the basketball side, schedule guru Alex Rosinski reported on Twitter that Washington State will play a home-and-home series with Weber State this season and next. The first meeting is set for Dec. 9 in Ogden, with the return game in Pullman coming in 2027-28.
Weber State finished last season 16-16 and 10-8 in conference play, landing at No. 202 in KenPom. Its top player, guard Tijan Saine, a former Western Washington transfer, entered the transfer portal and has not signed elsewhere so far.
