The Phillies have a rotation problem, and Andrew Painter’s name has surfaced in a way few would have expected.
Philadelphia still has Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo, and Zack Wheeler, but the need for another starter is real. Aaron Nola’s inconsistency and the struggles from the No. 5 spot have pushed starting pitching to the front of the team’s trade deadline priorities. Painter could be part of the answer - just not necessarily in Philadelphia’s own rotation.
Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic identified Painter as a possible piece in a trade framework with the Detroit Tigers for Tarik Skubal, the back-to-back Cy Young-winning ace. The idea is a bold one, but it lines up with what rival executives reportedly believe Detroit would want in return.
"The way they would do it, according to two rival executives briefed on the Tigers' thinking, is by trading Skubal for a controllable starting pitcher plus quality prospects," Sammon and Rosenthal write. "...
Among the pitchers who might fit in such a trade: ... Andrew Painter, Philadelphia Phillies."
That’s where Painter enters the conversation. If the Tigers move Skubal, a young, controllable starter would make sense as the centerpiece, and Painter fits that profile.
Painter is still only 23 and remains a high-upside arm, even after a rough stretch in the majors this season. He posted a 7.06 ERA in 65 innings before being sent down to Triple-A, but his long-term value has not disappeared. In a deal of this kind, he could still headline the package.
From the Phillies’ side, the fit is obvious on paper. A postseason rotation of Skubal, Sanchez, Wheeler, and Luzardo would be a serious group. But the price would be steep, especially for a pitcher who would be a half-season rental.
Skubal would not come cheap, and if Philadelphia wants to chase the biggest name available, he is the kind of arm that could change the market. Still, giving up Painter and additional premium prospects for only three months of Skubal would be a massive commitment, and one that could come at a cost to the team’s future.
