Phillies Make Late Infield Move After Nationals Exit

The Phillies bolster their infield depth by signing veteran shortstop Sergio Alcntara to a minor-league deal shortly after his release from the Nationals.

The Philadelphia Phillies wasted no time in bolstering their roster, snapping up shortstop Sergio Alcántara just a day into the regular season. Released by division rivals, the Washington Nationals, Alcántara didn't make their opening day roster but quickly found a new home with the Phillies. While Philadelphia's major league infield is solid, the addition of Alcántara provides crucial depth at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Alcántara, 29, inked a minor-league deal with the Phillies, bringing his versatile defensive skills to the table. Though he might not be eyeing a spot on the major league roster immediately, his presence is a strategic move, offering insurance in case of injuries.

With appearances in four of the last six MLB seasons, Alcántara has logged 193 games. His stints with the Cubs, Padres, and Diamondbacks in 2021 and 2022 gave him some exposure, but struggles at the plate led to multiple designations for assignment. His brief appearance for the Giants last season and a 2-for-11 showing with the Nationals in spring training highlight the need for improvement in his offensive game.

Alcántara's career .618 OPS across 506 plate appearances suggests his strength lies in his defensive versatility. At Triple-A, he can play multiple infield positions, aiding the development of other prospects. However, if the Phillies face injuries to key players like Trea Turner, Bryson Stott, Edmundo Sosa, or Alec Bohm, Alcántara's reliable glove could earn him a call-up as a temporary fill-in.
