The Nationals made a flurry of roster moves before their Game 2 matchup with the Phillies, and the biggest headline was James Wood landing on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain.
Washington is hoping the stay is brief, but oblique injuries are notoriously tough on hitters, so this is one to watch closely.
Wood’s IL move opened the door for Andrew Pinckney, a 25-year-old former top prospect who was added to the major league roster and should be in line for his MLB debut soon. The Nationals didn’t have him in the starting lineup Tuesday against Phillies left-hander Jesus Luzardo, so his first big league action will have to wait a bit longer.
Pinckney, a right-handed bat, figures to see most of his chances against lefties. He arrives after a productive stretch at Triple-A Rochester, where he hit .271/.345/.425 with 13 home runs, 25 extra-base hits and 51 RBIs in 94 games. The one concern is the strikeout total: 473 strikeouts in 397 career games is a glaring number, and it’s something Washington will be monitoring.
The bullpen also got a makeover, and the Nationals moved quickly to bring in two fresh arms.
Right-hander Yovanny Cruz was added to the roster before Monday’s opener after coming over in the Luis Garcia Jr. return package from the New York Yankees. He didn’t pitch in that game, even though Washington’s bullpen coughed up another lead.
Cruz brings premium stuff and looks positioned for high-leverage work down the stretch, giving Nationals fans a first look at a reliever who could have the best arm in the group.
Left-hander Will Dion was also recalled after Eddy Yean was optioned back to Rochester following Monday’s game. Dion, acquired from the Cleveland Guardians in the Foster Griffin return package, has a 4.58 ERA in 12 big league appearances this season, but he’s also shown a different kind of value: 25 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings with only three walks.
