No specific names were attached to those reports, but there are several obvious candidates to monitor.
Luis Garcia Jr. has already been identified as someone drawing interest from contenders. He’s in the middle of the best MLB season of his career, and his profile makes sense for teams hunting a left-handed power bat who can also handle second base when needed.
Foster Griffin is another player to watch. The left-hander has been excellent in his first season back in Major League Baseball after three years in Japan, and with free agency looming after the year, Washington could decide to move him now rather than risk losing him for nothing later.
Then there are Curtis Mead and Jacob Young. Mead is putting together a career-best season at the plate, while Young has shown he can drive the ball out of the park and pair that with elite defense. Right-handed bats are expected to be especially valuable heading into the deadline because of how few are available, which only adds to the appeal of both players.
For now, the Nationals’ direction remains unsettled. They could buy, they could sell, or they could try to do a little of both by adding long-term pieces while still giving this group a chance to keep pushing for the postseason.
