Garcia, 26, has been one of the most productive bats in the National League this season. He leads the league in slugging percentage and is hitting .283/.313/.560 with 23 home runs. The return for Washington is heavy on arms. Per MLB insider Robert Murray, the Nationals are getting four prospects from New York: pitchers Yovanny Cruz, Jack Cebert, Ben Grable and Jake Bird. Garcia is under team control through the end of the 2027 season and won’t be eligible for free agency until 2028. For now, he is on a one-year, $6,785,000 contract that was originally signed with the Nationals, per Spotrac. The deal is fully guaranteed.
This season, Garcia has appeared in 104 games and posted 23 homers and 76 RBI while carrying a .560 slugging percentage and an .873 OPS. Over seven seasons, he has built a career line of .268 with 81 home runs and 345 RBI in 708 games.
The trade gives the Yankees the bat they were looking for, while the Nationals add a four-pitcher haul that should immediately deepen their staff.
