Nationals Just Lost A Hitting Voice Other Teams Clearly Wanted

The Seattle Mariners make a strategic move by appointing CJ Gillman, a seasoned hitting expert with a successful track record, to boost their offensive game.

The Mariners are turning to a familiar face to guide their bats. Seattle is set to hire CJ Gillman as its new hitting coach, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Chandler Rome, and Spencer Nusbaum.

Gillman has already spent time in the organization, serving as Seattle’s minor league hitting coordinator from 2022-25. He then moved on to Washington and spent last season as the Nationals’ director of hitting, a role that gave him a wider look at an organization’s offensive approach.

His return comes in the middle of a broader staff reset in Seattle. Kevin Seitzer had been the Mariners’ hitting coach in 2025-26 before being dismissed at the end of the season, part of a shake-up that also included three other coaches and manager Dan Wilson.

Gillman is the first new hire to fill one of those openings, even though the club still has a manager vacancy to sort out. Joe Espada and Jason Kanzler are reportedly the two finalists for that job.

Seattle’s next manager will almost certainly have a voice in how the 2027 coaching staff comes together, but the Athletic report notes there’s a clear reason to move now on Gillman. He already knows the organization, and he also appeared to leave a strong mark in Washington. The Nationals overhauled their hitting operation under Paul Toboni, and in 2026 the club improved at both the major league and minor league levels.

The Mariners have been trying to solve the same problem for years: finding steady offense. That issue dates back to Gillman’s previous run in the system.

Under Seitzer, the lineup looked as if it had finally broken through in 2025, when Seattle posted a .244/.320/.420 slash line and a 113 wRC+ that ranked third in baseball. But in 2026, the Mariners’ team wRC+ dipped to 102, good for tenth overall, and a big chunk of the production came from Randy Arozarena, who is expected to leave in free agency.

There’s plenty of work ahead for Gillman. Julio Rodriguez, Josh Naylor, and especially Cal Raleigh all saw their numbers fall from 2025, and getting that trio back on track will be central to the job. Seattle is also counting on its next wave of young hitters, with former top prospects Colt Emerson, Cole Young, Lazaro Montes, and Michael Arroyo expected to play a significant role in the big league lineup.

Jarlin Susana Is Giving Nationals Fans A New Reason To Dream

Jarlin Susana is back on the radar in a big way this fall, and the Arizona Fall League is giving Nationals fans a fresh look at why he has been such a coveted arm in the system. The hard-throwing right-hander has been flashing fastballs that climb past 100 mph, a reminder of the power stuff that made him one of Washingtons most intriguing pitching prospects in the first place.

What makes the showing even more encouraging is the context around it. Susana is coming off a lat muscle injury that interrupted his 2025 season, yet he has still emerged as the only top-100 pitching prospect in the league this fall. With his MLB debut currently projected for 2027, the Nationals are watching closely for signs that he can keep building toward an Opening Day role in the years ahead. [Read more 🡒]
