Nationals Eye New First Base Stars for 2026 Season

The Nationals explore a mix of internal talent and new acquisitions as they seek a long-term solution at first base for the 2026 season.

The Washington Nationals have been on a quest to solidify their first base position ever since Ryan Zimmerman hung up his cleats. While Josh Bell provided some memorable moments last season, the position has largely been a revolving door of uncertainty.

Rumors swirled about Rhys Hoskins potentially joining the Nationals in free agency, but those whispers proved unfounded. Now, the team is looking inward to fill the gap. So, who’s likely to step up as the Nationals’ first baseman on Opening Day?

Luis Garcia Jr.

Luis Garcia Jr. is a key storyline to watch this spring. The Nationals need his bat, but his defense at second base has been shaky, save for a standout season in 2024. If Garcia transitions to first base, it could shake up the middle infield dynamics, affecting players like CJ Abrams, Nasim Nuñez, and Jose Tena.

Abimelec Ortiz

A fresh face in the Nationals' lineup, Abimelec Ortiz arrived from the Rangers in the MacKenzie Gore trade. Ortiz is known for his power, having smashed 25 homers between AA and AAA last year, with a 33-homer season in 2023. His raw power is undeniable, and he’s a strong contender to start at first base.

Andrés Chaparro

Andrés Chaparro, already on the 40-man roster, is battling the '4A' player stigma. He’s crushed minor league pitching but has yet to find his groove in the majors. Perhaps with the right coaching, Chaparro can unlock his potential and make his mark.

Sleepers: Warming Bernabel, Matt Mervis, Yohandy Morales

This trio of non-roster invitees faces long odds to make the Opening Day roster. Warming Bernabel and Matt Mervis, both relatively young, were released by struggling teams but still hold potential if they can put it all together. They’re likely to start the season with AAA Rochester.

Yohandy Morales, a former second-round pick, has had a rocky start to his professional career. However, his bat heated up late in the 2025 season, and he impressed in winter league ball with a 1.097 OPS over 45 plate appearances. Despite his resurgence, Morales is also expected to begin the season in Rochester, with Ortiz’s spot on the 40-man roster giving him an edge.
