As the MLB season gears up, the Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals are set to kick things off with high hopes and compelling storylines. The Cubs, fresh off a strong playoff showing, are eyeing a World Series run, while the Nationals are embarking on a new chapter under manager Blake Butera.
The action begins on March 26 at the iconic Wrigley Field, where the Cubs will face the Nationals at 1:20 p.m. CT. Veteran pitcher Matthew Boyd will take the mound for Chicago, while Washington's Cade Cavalli, a comeback story in the making, will start for the Nationals.
Wrigley Field, with its rich history, sets the stage for what promises to be an electrifying Opening Day. The Nationals haven't opened a season here since 2012, adding an extra layer of excitement to the matchup.
Matthew Boyd, who has deep roots with the Cubs thanks to his late grandfather's fandom, is set to lead Chicago's charge. After signing with the Cubs last year, Boyd delivered a stellar season, earning his first All-Star selection and posting an impressive 12-1 record with a 2.51 ERA in 15 starts at Wrigley. His performance and leadership have earned him the honor of being the Cubs' Opening Day starter.
Reflecting on his grandfather's influence, Boyd shared, “He would’ve really enjoyed this. He would’ve been thinking about it the second I told him and probably wouldn’t have slept much until [Opening Day] -- that’s just how he operated.”
On the other side, Cade Cavalli's journey to Opening Day is a testament to resilience. Drafted by the Nationals in 2020, Cavalli's career faced setbacks with shoulder inflammation and Tommy John surgery.
Yet, his determination saw him return to the majors in August 2025. Now, at 27, he's ready to lead the Nationals' rotation.
Nationals manager Blake Butera praised Cavalli, saying, “Talk about who you want at the top of your rotation. From a makeup standpoint, from a human standpoint, from a pitching standpoint, he checks all those boxes.”
With both teams ready to showcase their talents, Opening Day at Wrigley Field is set to be a thrilling start to the season.
