The Wisconsin Badgers are gearing up for another run in the Big Ten tournament, aiming to make it three consecutive trips to the title game from the No. 5 seed. Ranked 23rd, the Badgers (22-9) are set to face off against the 12th-seeded Washington Huskies (16-16) in a third-round clash on Thursday afternoon.
Washington is coming off a thrilling 83-79 overtime victory against Southern California. Zoom Diallo was the star, notching 22 points and dishing out 11 assists.
Wesley Yates III and Quimari Peterson chipped in with 15 points each, while Hannes Steinbach contributed a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Huskies showed grit, rallying from a 13-point deficit in the second half.
Coach Danny Sprinkle praised his team’s resilience, saying, "Adversity hasn't defined us all year. We've had guys quit.
We've had guys get injured, and these guys keep battling." Washington's tenacity was on full display as they overcame a three-point deficit in overtime, with Peterson's clutch 3-pointer leading a decisive 7-0 run.
Sprinkle highlighted Diallo's performance, especially his ability to manage four fouls during the critical moments of the game. "Zoom was terrific," he noted, emphasizing the importance of defense and discipline in the final stages of regulation and overtime.
The Badgers previously defeated the Huskies 90-73 in Seattle, with Braeden Carrington lighting up the scoreboard with a career-high 32 points and a school-record nine 3-pointers. Washington's Sprinkle acknowledged the need for a stronger defensive effort this time around, saying, "We didn't play with any force that game. Hopefully, we play with a lot more energy."
Wisconsin's coach, Greg Gard, and his staff have been meticulously preparing for the tournament, adjusting game plans to maximize efficiency. "It took a little while for us to kind of get it up and really rolling in the right direction," Gard said, crediting his assistants for their strategic input.
Leading the charge for the Badgers are Nick Boyd and John Blackwell. Boyd, an All-Big Ten second-team selection, averages 20.1 points and 4.0 assists per game, while Blackwell, on the All-Big Ten third team, contributes 18.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Washington's Sprinkle is well aware of the challenge, acknowledging, "They've got two of the best guards in the league."
