Monday marks a pivotal day for Washington football as NFL scouts and coaches converge at the Dempsey Indoor Facility. They're here to evaluate UW's top draft-eligible players during Pro Day, a crucial showcase for athletes aspiring to make it to the big leagues.
Pro Days are a staple for major programs, and Washington is no exception. Up to 16 draft hopefuls are expected to participate, including a player from a previous class. This event is a chance for these athletes to shine, displaying their skills and physical attributes.
The day kicks off with measurements-height, weight, arm length, and hand size. Players can also opt to demonstrate their strength in the bench press, with 225 pounds being the standard for reps.
Next up, the athletes hit the Dempsey Indoor Facility for agility tests. The 40-yard dash gauges straight-line speed, while the 20-yard shuttle and L-test (3-cone) measure change of direction. Occasionally, the 60-meter shuttle is added to test a combination of speed, deceleration, and agility.
Explosiveness is assessed through the vertical jump and standing broad jump. Once testing wraps up, UW position coaches lead players through drills specific to their roles, showcasing their athleticism, technique, and football acumen.
NFL coaches and scouts might also request additional drills to evaluate other facets of a player's game.
