Elijah Brown may be in line for his first Husky start on Friday in West Lafayette, and that decision could give Washington a badly needed jolt as it chases its first Big Ten win of the season.
Brown’s possible promotion is the biggest storyline coming out of Wednesday’s notes, but it wasn’t the only one. Washington’s coaches and players all spent time talking through what went wrong last week and what has to change before Purdue.
Ryan Walters pointed to a messy performance against Iowa, saying there were a lot of “uncharacteristic mistakes” in the game and calling the tackling “Awful”. He added that the defense was “focused wanting to get the taste out of their mouth from last Friday”. That intensity will matter against a different kind of Purdue offense, and Dawgman has a ($) transcript of the interview with the media.
Coach Cummings also met with reporters and said he liked the way the receivers attacked the ball in the second half. Even so, he said the group has to be more physical if it wants to help the run game. Dawgman has ($) a transcript.
On the defensive side, Derek Coleman-Brusa and Buddah Al-Uqdah spoke with the media. Derek stressed the “importance of doing your job”. Dawgman has ($) a transcript.
Offensively, Champ Taulealea and John Mills took questions as well. John called the situation “very frustrating and angry but we have to push on”. Dawgman has ($) a transcript.
There’s also a closer look from Dan Raley at how Elijah Brown has earned the chance to start for UW. The piece lays out Brown’s college game-by-game numbers, including his four starts at Stanford - one in 2024 and three games in 2025.
Elsewhere, Sports Illustrated put together a list of nine major programs that have badly underperformed so far this season, and Washington made the cut. Penn State, Oregon, and Michigan were the other Big Ten teams included.

Washington Linebacker Depth Gets Tested By A Sudden New Opportunity
Washingtons defense is already navigating a stretch defined by injuries, and the linebacking group has taken another hit with Xe'ree Alexander going down. The Huskies have had to adjust on the fly around a roster that has also dealt with issues at quarterback, and now the ripple effect reaches deeper into the middle of the defense, where snaps and responsibilities are suddenly opening up.
For second-year linebacker Donovan Robinson Jr., the change creates a real chance to move from depth piece to regular contributor. Defensive coordinator Ryan Walters has liked what he has seen from Robinson, and the staff is preparing to lean on him more as the Huskies try to keep the defense steady through a difficult run of availability challenges. Jedd Fisch Just Put Washingtons Biggest Big Ten Challenge In Focus
Washingtons early Big Ten return has already exposed how thin the margin can be when a program is trying to build on the fly. Jedd Fisch said the Huskies have leaned heavily on freshmen because their roster investment has been modest by conference standards, and the result has been a team trying to learn and compete at the same time while sitting at 3-3 and still searching for consistency in league play and scoring.
Fischs comments put the next phase of the rebuild in sharper focus, especially for a staff trying to keep promising young players from becoming somebody elses experience. The challenge now is not just fielding a competitive group this fall, but finding a way over the next couple of years to strengthen the roster with the kind of veteran help that can change how Washington matches up in the Big Ten.
