Just as Jedd Fisch seemed to have Washington moving in the right direction, the recruiting trail delivered a couple of hits that took some of the shine off the moment. Over the weekend, wide receiver Dontay Tyson flipped from Washington to Wisconsin.
Then yesterday, the Huskies lost their quarterback commit from the class as Arizona QB Blake Roskopf said he would reopen his commitment. That development leaves a real question hanging over Fisch’s approach: has he shifted away from building heavily through high school recruits, and will Washington increasingly look to the transfer portal to stock the quarterback room?
Christian Caple has more on Roskopf’s decision and what it could mean.
Meanwhile, one of Washington’s former stars was reflecting on how much the sport has changed. Trent McDuffie, who once controlled one side of the defensive backfield for the Huskies, talked in a radio interview about missing the Pac-12.
He pointed specifically to the regional feel of the league and the rivalries that came with it. It’s a sentiment that’s easy to understand, even if the modern game seems headed in a different direction, with revenue driving more and more of the conversation.
There was at least some good news to come out of the football side last week. Washington picked up its signature road win of the season, and Chris Lawson and Demond Williams were central to it. Both players spoke with the media yesterday about what helped the Huskies finally get past a stubborn Nebraska defense.
On the men’s soccer side, it was a split week for the Huskies. The No. 6 team in the country fell 1-0 on the road to No.
25 UCLA, but Washington still locked up the No. 2 seed in the Big 10 Tournament. The Dawgs will play in the conference semifinal on the 11th against the winner of Rutgers vs.
UCLA.

Washington Just Raised A Bigger Quarterback Concern For The Future
Washingtons quarterback future took another hit this week when Blake Roskopf backed off his pledge, adding to a run of recruiting turbulence that has already left the program trying to steady itself. The four-star prospect had been the lone quarterback committed in the Class of 2027, so his departure does more than thin out a recruiting board. It leaves the Huskies looking at a future room that now has to be built almost entirely from scratch.
The timing matters because this is the second high-end recruit to step away in the past week, and it comes against the backdrop of a program that may be prioritizing retention over splashy recruiting wins. For a staff trying to protect the roster it already has, that approach can make sense, but it also creates pressure elsewhere, especially at quarterback, where the pipeline is suddenly a concern rather than a strength. Washington May Be Catching Penn State At Exactly The Right Time
Penn States season has been a study in adjustment under first-year head coach Matt Campbell, and the changes have shown up on both sides of the ball. Brian Bennetts read on the Nittany Lions points to a team still searching for consistency, with quarterback Rocco Becht trying to steady the offense while new defensive coordinator DAnton Lynn continues sorting through scheme tweaks and personnel fit.
For Washington, that makes this matchup feel like it could arrive at a useful moment. The Huskies are getting a Penn State team that has had to manage a lot of moving parts, from offensive production to defensive identity, and the uncertainty around who is available and who can carry the load has been part of the story all season. There is still enough talent on the roster to make this a tricky test, but the broader picture suggests a group that is still trying to find its footing. [Read more 🡒]
Washington Defense Just Changed The Huskies' Bowl Push
After the loss to Iowa, Washington needed a response, and the Huskies have gotten one in the form of a defense that suddenly looks far more dependable. In back-to-back wins, the unit has tightened up against Purdue and Nebraska, cutting down scoring chances and creating the kind of momentum-changing turnovers that can flip a season in November.
The latest step forward came against Nebraska, where Washington kept the pressure on and turned defense into points. The Huskies are now one win away from bowl eligibility, and with the way the defense has steadied the team, the final stretch feels a lot more manageable than it did just a couple of weeks ago.
