Washington Just Caught A Huge Break In A Pivotal Big Ten Test

Iowa faces a pivotal test against Washington as backup quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski steps up in the absence of injured starter Hank Brown.

Iowa’s plans at quarterback took a hit Friday morning, with Hank Brown expected to sit out against Washington because of an upper-body injury.

ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel reported that Brown will not start Friday night and would only be available in an emergency. That leaves Iowa turning to Jeremy Hecklinski for a major Big Ten test.

Hecklinski has seen limited action this season, but his workload has climbed. He threw only two passes last year, then has attempted 32 this season, completing 18 for 208 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

He also helped Iowa find the end zone last week in the 31-14 loss to Ohio State. Even against the Buckeyes’ backups, Hecklinski directed the Hawkeyes’ only touchdown drive, and he looked comfortable in the pocket while giving himself some momentum heading into his first career start.

The timing is significant for Iowa, which is closing out a brutal three-game run against Michigan, Ohio State and Washington. That stretch is likely to shape the Hawkeyes’ path in the College Football Playoff race.

Iowa has already split the first two games in that stretch, and a win Friday would go a long way given what’s left on the schedule. The Hawkeyes do not have another game against a ranked opponent, so they’ll probably be favored the rest of the way.

Still, getting a win at Washington is no simple assignment. Iowa will need to find a way to battle through the injury setback and come out with a result that could matter a lot when the season is sorted out.

Washington Faces A Huge Test As Iowa Matchup Could Change Everything

Washingtons trip to face Iowa comes with the kind of late-week uncertainty that can tilt a game before either team takes the field. The matchup has drawn plenty of attention because of the contrast in styles, the grind of the travel, and the fact that a few analysts see this one coming down to a single possession, with predictions split between a narrow Iowa win and a close Washington victory.

The intrigue only grows when the quarterback and offensive line situations enter the conversation, because both sides have personnel questions that could shape the entire game plan. Washington, in particular, needs its front to hold up and its offense to find some stability if it wants to avoid letting a strong defensive opponent dictate the night, and the range of predictions says plenty about how little margin for error either team has here. Demond Williams Jr. Is Earning National Buzz Amid Washington's Bigger Problem

Demond Williams Jr. keeps drawing more attention beyond Montlake, and this week the Washington quarterback landed among the final 15 finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. It is the kind of recognition that reflects more than just box-score production, since the honor also takes into account character and academic performance along with what happens between the lines.

For Washington, the buzz around Williams only adds another layer to a season in which the quarterback has already given the offense some real stability. The third-year signal-caller has completed 67.5% of his passes for 1,327 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions, and his rise is becoming one of the more encouraging storylines around a program still searching for a bigger answer elsewhere.
