Washington Heads To Purdue With Depth Suddenly Under Pressure

Washington Huskies face a challenging matchup against Purdue with key players sidelined due to injuries, putting a spotlight on their depth and strategy adjustments.

Washington will head to Purdue on Friday with more than one hole in the rotation.

The Huskies are already expected to be without third-year quarterback Demond Williams Jr., who left the Oct. 9 loss to Iowa with a rib injury. Now, the latest Big Ten injury report adds two more names to the list: first-year running back Ansu Sanoe and third-year defensive tackle Kai McClendon are both out for the 5 p.m. PT matchup at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Ind.

Sanoe’s absence trims an already thin backfield. He had settled in as Washington’s third running back after injuries hit second-year Quaid Carr and fourth-year Jayden Limar in Week 1. At 6-foot and 240 pounds, he’s been used mainly in short-yardage and goal-line work, and this season he has carried seven times for eight yards and two touchdowns.

With Sanoe sidelined, Washington’s depth chart at running back now starts with first-year Brian Bonner Jr., followed by sixth-year Trey Cooley and second-year Ryken Moon. Fourth-year tight end Kade Eldridge has also taken carries this season and could be asked to handle even more backfield work with the recent injury issues.

Sanoe is the fifth Washington running back to miss time this season. Jordan Washington, the assumptive starter entering the offseason, suffered a neck injury in spring practice, while Julian McMahan is out for the season with a foot/ankle injury.

McClendon’s absence is another hit to the front line. He transferred to Washington from Mississippi State this offseason after sitting out the 2024-25 season because of an injury, following an impressive true freshman campaign. The junior defensive lineman spent much of the offseason working back from the same injury that ended his sophomore year at Mississippi State, and he opened the season on a snap count that has grown with each game.

Purdue Just Caught Washington At A Very Interesting Time

Washington heads into its meeting with Purdue in a tricky spot, with the offense still trying to find traction and the running game offering little help as the Huskies chase their first Big Ten win of the season. The quarterback picture only adds to the uncertainty, since Demond Williams Jr. is sidelined with a rib injury and Washington now has to lean on a different option under center at a time when every possession matters.

Elijah Brown is the next man up, and the junior transfer from Stanford brings a little intrigue because he has shown flashes in limited work since arriving in Seattle. Washington has not had much room for error on offense, so his presence changes both the rhythm and the expectations for a unit that has been searching for consistency. For a Huskies team trying to steady itself in conference play, this becomes one of those games where the backup quarterback storyline could shape far more than just the box score. [Read more 🡒]

Washingtons Playoff Path May Have Just Got Much Easier

For a Washington program that has already shown it can reach the College Football Playoff, the next version of the bracket could make the road a little less punishing. The postseason is reportedly moving toward a major expansion beginning in the 2027 season, and if it goes through, the Huskies would be operating in a landscape where one hot year could be enough to put them back in the mix.

What makes the idea so appealing in Seattle is not just the larger field, but the possibility of a format that creates more entry points for teams from the sports top conferences. Washington has twice reached the playoff before, and in a bigger bracket the margin for error should shrink. The final approvals still have to come, but the direction of the sport is clear enough to make future Huskies seasons look a lot more interesting. [Read more 🡒]
