The Apple Cup is sliding even deeper into the summer.
After the UW Huskies and WSU Cougars opened the 2026 season against each other, the rivalry game will return even earlier in 2027 - this time on Saturday, Aug. 28.
The matchup will be played at Pullman’s Martin Stadium, the Cougars’ home field, after originally being set for Sept. 18.
WSU announced Monday that the two schools agreed to move the game.
This year’s Apple Cup came on Sept. 6 and landed on the final Sunday before the NFL season resumed, giving the matchup a national-TV showcase. UW handled business in that one, beating WSU 24-10 at Husky Stadium.
The calendar shift is part of a bigger change for the rivalry. The Apple Cup used to sit on the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving when both schools were still in the Pac-12, or one of the conference’s earlier versions. That tradition changed after UW left for the Big Ten in 2024, and the game has since taken on an early-season slot.
The recent results have tilted the Huskies’ way. UW has won the last two meetings, while WSU’s last victory in the series came in 2024 at Seattle’s Lumen Field, the neutral-site home of that year’s game.
The programs are both still grinding through their current seasons. UW sits at 4-3 with five regular-season games left, while WSU is 1-7 with four games remaining in its first season under head coach Kirby Moore and back in the new-look Pac-12.

Washington Let Another Rivalry Lead Slip Away In Costly Fashion
An exhibition loss does not count in the standings, but it can still sting when it comes against a rival. Washington fell to Washington State, 84-80, in a game that offered an early look at where the Huskies are still sorting things out, especially with ball security and work on the glass. LeJuan Watts led Washington with 28 points, and Nikola Dzepina added a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
The bigger concern for the Huskies was how often the Cougars created extra chances, turning missed opportunities into pressure possessions that Washington could not quite clean up. For a team trying to build habits before the games start counting, that kind of edge in a rivalry setting is hard to ignore, and it leaves Washington with a few obvious areas to address before the rematch mindset comes into focus. Washingtons QB Decision Just Got Bigger Ahead Of Nebraska
Washingtons quarterback picture is getting more complicated by the week, and the next decision looms just in time for Nebraska. Demond Williams Jr. entered the year with plenty of attention after his earlier transfer considerations, but the competition in Montlake has shifted as the staff weighs what gives the Huskies the best chance to settle things down under center.
Elijah Brown has pushed himself into the conversation, and the coaching staff now has to sort out a choice that could shape the rest of the season. With several games still ahead, the Huskies are not just looking for a short-term fix, but for a quarterback option that can bring some stability to an offense still searching for the right fit. Washington Heads Into Nebraska With Big Questions Still Hanging
Washington used its bye week to reset, but Jedd Fisch still had plenty to sort through as the Huskies turn their attention to Nebraska. The head coach touched on a few areas that will shape the game plan, including the center spot, the health of key players and what Washington needs to account for against a Nebraska defense Fisch described as strong and disruptive.
The biggest questions remain at quarterback and in the backfield as the Huskies manage their injury picture and try to get everyone ready for the trip. Fisch also gave an update on several players working their way back, and the answers were not fully in hand yet, which leaves Washington carrying some uncertainty into a matchup that will demand clarity fast.
