Washington Coach Reveals New Twist In RB Battle

Washington's head coach outlines the promising yet uncertain landscape of the running back competition as spring practice kicks off amid departures and new faces.

The Washington Huskies are gearing up for a new era in their backfield as spring practice kicks off. With key departures to the NFL Draft, including standout running back Jonah Coleman and wide receiver Denzel Boston, the stage is set for fresh faces to emerge.

Sophomore Adam Mohammed's transfer to Cal adds another twist, leaving the Huskies with significant gaps to fill. This spring is all about opportunity, especially for the younger backs eager to make their mark.

Notably absent from spring activities are transfer portal additions Jayden Limar from Oregon and Trey Cooley. This absence opens the door for others to seize the moment.

Head Coach Jedd Fisch highlighted the lack of collegiate film on several players, including Brian Bonner and Ansu Sanoe, both straight from high school. Jordan Washington, despite battling injuries last season, and Quaid Carr, who missed last year's spring football, are also in the mix. Julian McMahan, another player plagued by injuries, is ready to compete.

With eight players set to compete this spring, Fisch is offering a clean slate. Among them, Washington and Carr bring the most experience, with Washington having logged 233 yards on 27 carries last year. Meanwhile, Ryken Moon and D'Aryhian Clemons, transitioning from cornerback, are also looking to make an impact.

Bonner, a four-star recruit, and Sanoe, a three-star recruit, come with high expectations. Clemons, originally a defensive back, brings versatility and a strong high school running back background.

Running backs coach Scottie Graham emphasized the program's focus on competition. Speed is a standout trait among the group, with Jordan Washington clocking a 10.2-second 100-meter dash. Bonner and Carr aren't far behind, showcasing a backfield that could rival a track team.

As the Huskies dive into spring practice, all eyes will be on who rises to the challenge and steps into the spotlight, much like Jonah Coleman did in seasons past. The competition promises to be fierce, and the outcome could shape the Huskies' fortunes heading into the new season.
