As spring football gears up, the focus is on the tailbacks and offensive line, two groups that have largely remained intact despite some notable departures. With the loss of key players like RB Adam Mohammed and OL Paki Finau, the returning talent is eager to step up. Coaches Scottie Graham and Mike Switzer are keen to see who rises to the occasion during spring practices, where consistency and performance will determine who earns playing time.
Scottie Graham's Insights
Graham emphasized the importance of competition among the running backs, stating, "The central theme of our program is competition. I want to see them compete and who comes out on top."
When discussing the trio of Brian Bonner, Quaid Carr, and Jordan Washington, Graham highlighted their exceptional speed. "They're extremely fast. We could probably win the 4x1 NCAAs in our running back room," he noted, referencing their impressive 100-meter times: Jordan at 10.2, Brian at 10.4, and Quaid at 10.5.
Graham also spoke about Brian Bonner's potential. At just 17, Bonner is still developing, but Graham is optimistic about his future. "He's still learning and he'll get a chance to compete and play," Graham said.
Reflecting on his new role as assistant head coach, Graham expressed gratitude. "I thank God for it, I thank coach Fisch. It's an honor I don't take lightly," he shared.
Spotlight on Kodi Greene
Graham praised freshman offensive tackle Kodi Greene's dedication and natural abilities. Greene's standout moment came during a practice when his technique caught the attention of veteran players. "He's separated himself in terms of how he approaches his daily work," Graham observed, noting Greene's potential to secure a spot at left tackle.
Offseason Progress
Both Soane and Elijah have made significant strides in the offseason. Soane's weight loss journey has brought him under 320 pounds, a testament to his hard work.
Elijah, on the other hand, has successfully gained weight, now at 296 pounds, which enhances his on-field presence. Consistency and availability will be key for both as they prepare for spring ball.
Chasing the Joe Moore Award
The offensive line has set its sights on the prestigious Joe Moore Award, a goal that was first discussed in January. Switzer emphasized the importance of daily improvement, both individually and as a unit. "I love it that they have that thought and that goal, but our real focus is now on how we continue to be as good as we can be, as fast as we can be this spring as a group," he stated.
As spring practices unfold, these position groups are poised to showcase their skills and determination, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
