Seattle - As the Washington men's basketball team gears up for their Big Ten Tournament opener against USC, rookie sensation Hannes Steinbach is already making waves. The standout big man from Würzburg, Germany, has been showered with accolades, adding All-Big Ten honors to his impressive rookie season.
Steinbach was named Third Team All-Big Ten by both the conference's coaches and media, and he also earned a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. The Associated Press recognized his stellar performance by placing him on the Second Team All-Big Ten.
This marks a historic moment for Washington, as Steinbach is the first Husky to receive All-Big Ten honors and the first freshman to earn an all-conference nod since Isaiah Stewart in 2020.
Steinbach's season has been nothing short of remarkable. He's ranked second nationally with 20 double-doubles in 28 games, setting a new standard for Big Ten freshmen since the 1996-97 season. His ability to rise to the occasion is evident, with 10 of his 12 games featuring 20-plus points and 10-plus rebounds coming against Big Ten opponents.
On track to post the 19th season in Washington's history averaging a double-double, Steinbach could become the first freshman to achieve this feat for the Huskies.
A product of the Würzburg Baskets, Steinbach has established himself as one of the premier rebounders in college basketball, ranking second nationally with 11.6 rebounds per game and seventh in the Big Ten with 18.6 points per game.
Adding to the accolades, Husky sophomore guard Zoom Diallo was named to the Big Ten All-Sportsmanship Team, representing Washington with pride.
