Former Washington forward Hannes Steinbach is headed to the G-League after Charlotte assigned him to the Greensboro Swarm on Thursday.
Steinbach’s move comes after a slow start to his rookie season with the Hornets, who are 3-7 through 10 games and sit 11th in the Eastern Conference, just outside the play-in picture. Charlotte dropped its NBA Cup game to the Boston Celtics, 119-80, on Friday.
The former Huskies standout has appeared in only three of Charlotte’s 10 games this season. In those outings, he has averaged 2.7 points on 50% shooting from the field, along with 2.3 rebounds and 0.3 assists. He has not taken a 3-pointer.
Steinbach arrived in Seattle as an international recruit from Wurzburg, Germany, and made an immediate impact in his lone season with Washington. He played in 30 games, starting all of them, and averaged 18.5 points while shooting 57.7% from the floor and 34% from beyond the arc.
He also posted 11.8 rebounds per game, plus 1.6 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.1 steals. That production earned him third-team All-Big Ten honors, and he led the nation in rebounding while co-leading the country in double-doubles with 22.
That breakout year helped push Steinbach into the 2026 NBA Draft, where Charlotte took him with the final lottery pick at No. 14 overall. He showed enough in Summer League and preseason to keep hope alive, but he still hasn’t cracked the Hornets’ regular rotation.
Now he’ll get a chance to log steady minutes with Greensboro, and Charlotte can bring him back whenever it wants. The NBA can recall players from the G-League at any point, so Steinbach could be back with the Hornets soon.

Washingtons Bowl Push Just Got Tougher With A Thinner Backfield
Washingtons path to a bowl game just got a little more complicated with the backfield taking another hit. Head coach Jedd Fisch said running backs Quaid Carr and Jordan Washington will not return this season, leaving the Huskies to piece together the rest of the year with a thinner group than they had hoped.
Brian Bonner, Jayden Limar and Trey Cooley now become the primary options, and there is at least some familiarity there. Limar has worked his way back from injury and has contributed in recent games, while Bonner and Cooley have already logged significant snaps this season. The challenge now is how Washington manages the workload and keeps the run game steady as the stakes rise down the stretch. [Read more 🡒]
Washington Faces A Homecoming Test That Could Change Everything
Homecoming brings a heavyweight test to Montlake, and the buildup around Washingtons matchup with Penn State has the feel of a game that could tell us a lot about where this team really stands. The staff predictions have leaned into how tight this one might be, with the Huskies' recent play and the Nittany Lions' personnel both pointing toward a contest shaped by execution more than flash.
The quarterback situation adds another layer to watch, especially after the way Washington handled its last outing and the way the offense has been managed around it. Penn State arrives with a defense that has been difficult to move, which means the Huskies will need clean decisions, steady protection and a little home-field edge to keep the night from turning into a long one. Washington Faces A Homecoming Test That Could Change Everything
A homecoming weekend at Husky Stadium brings a different kind of spotlight for Washington, with Penn State coming to town after the Huskies put together back-to-back road wins. The setting matters here, too, because the program will have recruits on hand and a chance to show them what the atmosphere looks like when the building is full and the stakes are real.
Demond Williams Jr. remains one of the biggest names to watch, even as his play has been uneven in Big Ten action and he works to settle into the role more firmly. Chris Lawson has also been a reliable target for the Huskies, though Penn States pass defense presents a tough test for Washingtons passing game and a chance for the offense to prove it can handle a higher level of resistance.
