At 35, Zach Ertz is proving that age is just a number. Despite coming off a significant injury, the Washington Commanders' tight end isn't ready to hang up his cleats just yet. After two solid seasons with the Commanders, where he racked up 654 receiving yards in 2024 and followed up with 504 yards in 2025 over 13 games, Ertz is gearing up for another season.
As he continues his recovery from a torn ACL, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that Ertz is set to play in 2026. While he's expected to be cleared around the start of the season, it's still uncertain if he'll be ready by Week 1.
Pelissero shared, "Three-time Pro Bowl TE Zach Ertz plans to play a 14th NFL season and is expected to be cleared right around Week 1, per sources. Ertz is 2 months into rehab from a torn ACL. He ranks 5th in catches and 8th in yards among TE in NFL history, including 50-504-4 in 13 games in 2025."
The big question now is: where will Ertz land in free agency? The Commanders might be interested in bringing him back, given his strong connection with quarterback Jayden Daniels and the team's need at tight end. However, general manager Adam Peters has emphasized the importance of getting younger and faster this offseason, which might complicate a reunion with the veteran.
"You're always trying to get younger and faster. That'll be a big emphasis for us this offseason," Peters stated last month.
Ertz will undoubtedly attract interest on the open market, but teams might wait until he's fully cleared to make a move. His experience and skill set ensure he remains a valuable asset, and it will be intriguing to see where he ends up next.
