Zach Ertz Is Already Slipping Back Into A Familiar Eagles Role

Zach Ertz reunites with the Eagles practice squad, eager for a new chapter with his former team amidst their current vacancy at tight end.

Zach Ertz is back where his NFL story started, and he’s not hiding how much that means to him.

The former Washington Commanders tight end signed with the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad this week, putting him in position to return to the field with the franchise where he spent the first 8.5 seasons of his 13-year career. With the Eagles set to face the Chicago Bears on Monday night and starting tight end Dallas Goedert out, Ertz could be elevated for the game.

For Ertz, this isn’t just another stop. It’s home.

“There was never a plan to come back,” Ertz said. “Obviously, I never wanted to leave in the first place, so let’s just put that out there.

The opportunity finally arose where I could come back. There’s been times I asked in the past to come back, and it didn’t come to fruition for whatever reason.

But for me, it’s just a blessing to be back.

If you told me when I got hurt that I’d be back here in nine and a half months practicing for the Philadelphia Eagles, you could have signed me up then. For me, this is a place I always called home. This is the place where, if anyone asks my favorite place to play, everyone knows it’s here.”

Ertz turns 36 in November and spent the past two seasons with Washington. He tore his ACL in a game against the Minnesota Vikings last December, but instead of letting that be the final chapter, he worked toward one more run on his own terms.

During his two years with the Commanders, Ertz started 30 games and posted 116 catches for 1,158 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also played a major role in Washington’s 2024 playoff push and was one of the team’s leaders.

His NFL résumé now stretches across 13 seasons, with 825 receptions, 8,592 receiving yards and 57 touchdowns. Ertz was also part of Philadelphia’s first Super Bowl title in 2017, a run capped by his go-ahead touchdown catch in the win over the New England Patriots.

The Commanders and Eagles already met in Week. They’ll see each other again on Nov. 1, when Philadelphia visits Washington for Sunday Night Football.

Commanders Suddenly Have A Terry McLaurin Problem They Cant Ignore

Terry McLaurins opening to the 2026 season has been quieter than anyone in Washington expected, with the veteran wideout managing only four catches for 64 yards through two games. The early numbers are jarring, especially for a receiver who has long been one of the Commanders most dependable weapons, but McLaurin has brushed off the slow start and said he trusts his process.

The concern for Washington is that the quarterback situation only makes the margin for error smaller. Jayden Daniels is dealing with a dislocated left elbow, and while McLaurin has experience working with backup Marcus Mariota, the Commanders still need their top target to find a rhythm quickly if the passing game is going to hold together through a shaky stretch. Jayden Daniels Just Put Washington In A Tough Spot

Jayden Daniels left elbow injury has already changed the Commanders early-season plans, and not in a small way. After dislocating it in Week 2, the rookie quarterback will miss Week 3 and likely Week 4, leaving Washington to move forward with Marcus Mariota expected to start while the team tries to dig out of an 0-2 start.

What makes this situation harder is Daniels decision to avoid surgery and try the nonsurgical route in hopes of getting back this season. It is a choice that has prompted criticism from multiple NFL executives, who worry about the risks to his long-term health and financial future, and it leaves Washington hoping the short-term gamble does not become something more complicated as the season goes on. Commanders Home Opener Brings One Real Chance To Stop This Slide

The home opener arrives with an unusual kind of urgency in Washington, where the Commanders are already staring at their first real checkpoint of the season. After losing Jayden Daniels, the offense has shifted to Marcus Mariota, and the pressure on the rest of the roster has only grown as the team looks for its first win of the year in Week 3 against Seattle.

For a defense that has talked about needing to create more disruption, this matchup offers a chance to help change the tone. The Seahawks bring their own uncertainty at quarterback because of Sam Darnolds injury, which gives Washington an opening to lean on pressure, chase turnovers and maybe finally give the home crowd something to build around.
