The Washington Commanders are bringing back a familiar face to bolster their depth at cornerback, signing Kevon Seymour to the practice squad ahead of their Week 15 showdown with the New York Giants.
Seymour, a 10-year NFL veteran, last suited up for Washington in 2024, appearing in three games and recording two tackles. He re-signed with the team earlier this year but was sidelined before the season began, landing on injured reserve and later reaching an injury settlement that led to his release.
Now, with the Commanders’ secondary stretched thin, Seymour returns to a defense in need of reinforcements. The current cornerback situation is precarious - Jonathan Jones and Antonio Hamilton Sr. are the only healthy options at the position. Both began the season as backups behind Marshon Lattimore and rookie Trey Amos, but with both starters now on injured reserve, Washington’s depth chart has been tested.
Enter Seymour, a seasoned pro with a résumé that includes stints with the Bills, Panthers, Eagles, Ravens, and Commanders. His most productive stretch came in 2021 with Baltimore, where he tallied 25 tackles and notched the only sack of his career. While he’s not a headline-grabbing addition, Seymour brings veteran savvy and system familiarity - two things that matter when you're plugging holes this late in the season.
At 32, Seymour isn’t being brought in to be a long-term solution. But in a league where injuries pile up fast and defensive backs are asked to step in at a moment’s notice, having a reliable, experienced option like him on standby is a smart move. He knows the scheme, he knows the building, and he’s shown he can step in and contribute when called upon.
With a divisional matchup looming and playoff hopes hanging by a thread, Washington needs all hands on deck. Seymour might not be the game-changer, but he’s the kind of steady presence that can help stabilize a secondary in flux - and at this point in the season, that kind of insurance is more valuable than it looks on paper.
