The Washington Commanders set out this offseason with a clear mission: inject youth and speed into their roster. Just over a week into NFL free agency, it looks like they’ve hit their mark.
General Manager Adam Peters has been on the offensive, retooling the defense while bolstering the offense around quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders addressed their pressing need at edge rusher by bringing in Odafe Oweh, K'Lavon Chaisson, and Charles Omenihu.
While the secondary still needs some attention, even after signing cornerback Amik Robertson and safety Nick Cross, the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft could be an opportunity to strengthen this area. Although LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane is a tempting option at the No. 7 overall pick, other positions might take precedence. Without a second-round pick, Washington’s next opportunity doesn’t come until No. 71 overall.
Despite this, Peters hasn’t shied away from engaging with potential second-round talents. South Carolina safety Jalon Kilgore has caught Washington’s eye, according to draft analyst Tony Pauline. Kilgore’s blend of size, athleticism, and versatility makes him an appealing prospect for new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones' scheme.
Standing at 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, Kilgore was a standout in the SEC, known for his football instincts. His ability to adapt to different roles on the field makes him a valuable asset.
NFL.com's Lance Zierlein describes Kilgore as a versatile defensive back who excels in covering tight ends and supporting the run game. While he needs to work on tackling consistency, his agility and strength suggest a promising future.
If Washington can maneuver to regain a second-round pick, Kilgore could become a realistic target. Their interest in him signals the type of players and scheme fits they’re considering for the draft.
Kilgore isn’t just on Washington’s radar. Teams like the Eagles, Seahawks, Texans, Panthers, and Colts have also lined up pre-draft visits with him, highlighting his appeal across the league.
