The Washington Commanders are gearing up for a busy offseason, armed with both cash and a shopping list of needs. But as any savvy GM knows, having money and spending it wisely are two different ball games.
Not every free agent will hit the open market, especially those with standout talent. Take Kyle Pitts, for example.
The Atlanta Falcons have made it clear they’re not letting their star tight end slip away. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Falcons plan to slap the franchise tag on Pitts, locking him in for a year at around $15 million.
They’re also eyeing a long-term deal before the July deadline.
For Commanders fans hoping Pitts might fill the void left by Zach Ertz, this news isn’t exactly what they wanted to hear. But it’s hardly a shock.
Atlanta’s new head coach, Kevin Stefanski, is keen on keeping Pitts, along with wide receiver Drake London and running back Bijan Robinson, as the core of his offense. However, the quarterback situation with Michael Penix Jr. still raises some eyebrows as he heads into year three.
Washington’s GM, Adam Peters, likely saw this coming. Even if Pitts was available, the Commanders might have balked at a massive contract.
Instead, Peters has other targets in mind to fill Ertz’s shoes. With new offensive coordinator David Blough showing interest in Ben Sinnott, reinforcements are surely on the way.
Names like Isaiah Likely, Chig Okonkwo, and Cade Otton are being tossed around as promising young talents. And with just six draft picks, Washington could explore the draft for fresh talent.
While Pitts is off the table, he remains a critical piece for the Falcons as they aim for a playoff return. He might not have hit the generational highs expected from his Florida days, but Pitts is still one of the league’s premier pass-catching tight ends.
For the Commanders, the focus should also be on bolstering the defense. Yet, surrounding quarterback Jayden Daniels with more offensive weapons is crucial. Securing a productive tight end with proven NFL skills would be a smart move.
Though Pitts won’t be donning a Commanders jersey, Washington is set on making impactful additions. Count on it.
