Treylon Burks has spent enough time fighting through setbacks to recognize a good situation when he sees one, and in Washington, he likes what he has around him.
The Commanders wide receiver is in his second year with the team, but this is his first training camp with Washington after a stop-and-start path that began with the Tennessee Titans. Burks’ first three NFL seasons were derailed by injury, leading the Titans to decline his fifth-year option and then waive him in the fall of 2025. Washington quickly brought him onto the practice squad, and when Luke McCaffrey suffered a season-ending injury, Burks was moved up to the main roster.
On Tuesday, after practice, Burks talked through the daily grind of learning the offense and what it takes to keep pace as the installs keep piling up.
“It’s hard,” Burks says. “We already had 40 other plays the day before, so you have to memorize them and then add 40 plays on top of that that night.
And so it’s a grind, but we’re grateful for it, and that’s why we come out here and put it on the practice field to perfect it. We know we’ll fail here and there, but as long as you just keep getting back up, everything else will take care of itself.”
That kind of work comes with the territory in camp, especially when everyone is trying to lock in the details at the same time and get on the same page with Jayden Daniels and David Blough.
Burks was then asked about Daniels, and his answer came fast.
“Man, words can’t really explain the kid,” Burks says. “He’s outstanding.
God definitely put his hand on him and has his hand on him. He’s just going to keep getting better and better each day, man, and I can’t wait to experience it.”
Burks has seen plenty of adversity already. During his junior season at Alabama, he became just the fourth player in school history to top 1,000 receiving yards in a single season.
But his NFL path has been far more difficult, and he’s had to keep pushing through every setback that came his way. Through it all, he’s remained the same easygoing presence with reporters while working to earn more snaps on the field.
Last season, Burks played in eight games for Washington and finished with 10 catches for 130 yards and a touchdown. If he can keep his 13 yards-per-reception average in 2026, there’s a chance his role could turn into something bigger.
