Trent Williams Just Reopened An Old Wound For Commanders Fans

As Trent Williams prepares to face the Commanders, the 49ers standout lineman reflects on his complicated legacy with his former team.

Trent Williams didn’t need much to remind anyone where he’s been and where he is now.

The 49ers left tackle spent 10 seasons with Washington after being taken No. 4 overall in the 2010 NFL Draft, but only nine of those seasons were actually played. One year was lost in the middle of a messy stretch that included a health scare, contract friction, and a breakup with the franchise that eventually sent him to San Francisco in 2020.

Since that trade during the 2020 NFL Draft, Williams has built an even more decorated run with the 49ers. He’s now in his seventh season in San Francisco, has earned first-team All-Pro honors three times, and has added five Pro Bowl selections since the move.

That’s the backdrop as Williams prepares to face Washington again on Monday. It will be his fourth game against the team since the trade, with San Francisco having won two of the first three meetings.

Asked on Saturday about his Washington years, Williams gave a line that likely won’t land well with every Commanders fan.

“Sometimes I forget that I even played there,” Williams said with a smile. “I’ve been here going on seven years, so I only played nine seasons there.

I was there 10 years, and I played nine seasons. You know, it’s been almost just as much time here as I have there.”

For plenty of Washington fans, the reaction to that quote may be complicated. Williams’ fallout came under former owner Dan Snyder and then-team president and GM Bruce Allen, with the tackle clashing with Washington over a contract and over a health issue tied to a cancer diagnosis. The tension was largely with Allen rather than Snyder, which is part of why many fans later sided with Williams.

Now 38, Williams has landed in the rare spot of still playing at an elite level deep into his career. He’s in his 18th NFL season, still chasing a Super Bowl ring, and the 49ers enter Monday night at 5-0 in 2026 with Washington coming to town.

Sam Cosmi Could Decide How Jayden Daniels Handles This Test

Sam Cosmi has been one of the few steady bright spots for Washington through its 1-3-1 start, especially in pass protection, where he has given the Commanders a reliable edge on the right side. His work has mattered even more because the offensive line has been trying to keep Jayden Daniels upright while also helping the run game find a footing, and that combination is exactly what Washington will need to lean on under the lights Monday night.

The challenge changes when the 49ers arrive, because the pressure will come from the interior and force Washington to hold up in the middle before it can worry about anything else outside. Cosmis matchup is one of the most important on the field, and how he handles it could go a long way toward deciding how comfortable Daniels looks and whether the Commanders can stay balanced long enough to make the game work on their terms. Trent Williams Just Gave The Commanders Extra Motivation Monday Night

Trent Williams is set to line up against the franchise where he spent nine seasons, and the reunion has all the ingredients for a little extra edge on Monday Night Football. The San Francisco left tackle was once one of Washington's cornerstone players before his departure reshaped the conversation around both sides, and his comments since then have only reinforced how far removed that relationship has become.

For Washington, the matchup offers more than a chance to test itself against one of the league's best blindside protectors. It also brings back a player whose exit still lingers in the background whenever these teams cross paths, giving the Commanders a little added incentive to make sure the night is remembered for what happens on the field rather than the old dispute off it. Commanders Still Waiting On A Huge Offensive Call Before 49ers

Stefon Diggs remains one of the biggest questions hanging over Washingtons offense heading into the matchup with the 49ers. The veteran receiver was listed as questionable after back-to-back limited practices, and his status is still being shaped by a hamstring injury that has kept the Commanders from knowing exactly what they will have until closer to game time.

Washington also has a broader injury picture to manage, with multiple other players on the report either questionable or already ruled out. The timing only adds to the stakes, since the Commanders go into a break right after Mondays game, giving the team an obvious reason to be careful with anyone they think could use the extra rest before the next stretch of the season.
