The Washington Commanders head to San Francisco for Monday Night Football with plenty of familiar faces on the other sideline, but Trent Williams may have added the sharpest edge of all.
Williams spent nine seasons in Washington before the team traded him to the 49ers after an ugly dispute involving the team’s medical staff and ownership. Since then, he’s built his reputation in San Francisco into that of a future Pro Football Hall of Famer and one of the greatest left tackles to ever play the position.
He also doesn’t seem interested in revisiting old emotions.
Asked whether he’d have any mixed feelings playing Washington after spending the first nine years of his career there, Williams said, “Sometimes I forget that I even played there. … I’ve (spent almost) as much time here as I did there.”
That’s the kind of quote that lands hard in Washington, especially with the Commanders looking for something to hang onto after last week’s brutal overtime ending against the New York Giants. Whether Williams meant it as a shot or just a sign that he’s moved on, it gives Washington extra bulletin-board material heading into prime time.
Of course, getting after Williams is easier said than done. Even at 38, he’s still operating at a Pro Bowl level, and slowing him down will be a major challenge for the Commanders’ pass rush. Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson will have their hands full trying to make his night memorable.
There’s also the lingering reality of why Williams’ time in Washington ended the way it did. The team mishandled a cancerous growth in his head, a situation that could have had serious consequences beyond football. That makes the whole episode hard to separate from the larger story, even if the trade ultimately worked out far better for Williams than it did for Washington.
Williams was still one of the best players to wear a Washington uniform since the turn of the century. He dominated there the same way he has in San Francisco; the difference is that team success never gave him the All-Pro recognition his play deserved.
So now the Commanders return to Levi’s Stadium with an old wound reopened and a chance to answer on the field. If they want to quiet the noise, they’ll have to do it by pulling off the upset in front of the entire NFL world.

Sam Cosmi Could Decide How Jayden Daniels Handles This Test
Sam Cosmi has been one of the few steady bright spots for Washington through its 1-3-1 start, especially in pass protection, where he has given the Commanders a reliable edge on the right side. His work has mattered even more because the offensive line has been trying to keep Jayden Daniels upright while also helping the run game find a footing, and that combination is exactly what Washington will need to lean on under the lights Monday night.
The challenge changes when the 49ers arrive, because the pressure will come from the interior and force Washington to hold up in the middle before it can worry about anything else outside. Cosmis matchup is one of the most important on the field, and how he handles it could go a long way toward deciding how comfortable Daniels looks and whether the Commanders can stay balanced long enough to make the game work on their terms. Commanders Still Waiting On A Huge Offensive Call Before 49ers
Stefon Diggs remains one of the biggest questions hanging over Washingtons offense heading into the matchup with the 49ers. The veteran receiver was listed as questionable after back-to-back limited practices, and his status is still being shaped by a hamstring injury that has kept the Commanders from knowing exactly what they will have until closer to game time.
Washington also has a broader injury picture to manage, with multiple other players on the report either questionable or already ruled out. The timing only adds to the stakes, since the Commanders go into a break right after Mondays game, giving the team an obvious reason to be careful with anyone they think could use the extra rest before the next stretch of the season. Sonny Styles Suddenly Carries A Huge Commanders Test Against San Francisco
The Commanders trip to San Francisco will ask a lot of Washingtons defense, and Sonny Styles has suddenly become one of the more interesting names in the conversation. The linebackers range and versatility give defensive coordinator Daronte Jones some options against a 49ers offense that can stress a unit in a lot of different ways, especially when it starts dictating tempo and forcing defenders to choose between aggression and discipline.
Styles looks like a player Washington may lean on in multiple roles, not just as a standard off-ball presence. His ability to move around and affect plays near the line gives the Commanders a chance to create some disruption, and that kind of flexibility could matter most when the game tightens up and San Francisco starts searching for answers on key downs.
