Terry McLaurin Setback Puts Two Commanders Questions Back In Focus

As Terry McLaurin's injury woes continue, the Commanders' management faces tough decisions about his future amidst concerns over long-term reliability and financial impact.

Terry McLaurin’s latest injury hiccup is exactly the kind of problem the Commanders were trying to avoid.

The wide receiver has already missed the first two days of practice ahead of a key matchup with the New York Giants, after sitting out Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts because of a hamstring issue that surfaced before that game. Washington clearly chose caution then, even though McLaurin wanted to play, and now the setback raises a bigger concern: this could linger.

That matters because McLaurin’s recent injury history is starting to change the conversation around him. For most of his career, durability was part of the package.

Over the last couple of seasons, though, the availability piece has become less dependable. For a receiver whose game depends on burst and quickness, that’s not a small detail.

It’s also the sort of development Adam Peters had to weigh when he handled McLaurin’s contract situation last year. The two sides spent a long time at odds before Washington finally paid him on terms that were relatively team-friendly. Peters has seen enough football to know how quickly wide receivers can hit trouble once they get into their 30s, and McLaurin’s current stretch only reinforces that caution.

The Commanders still need him. That part hasn’t changed. But the longer this keeps going, the more it complicates what comes next.

McLaurin is still producing when he’s out there, and nothing has been decided about his status now. Washington could simply be giving him extra time to recover before clearing him for action at Northwest Stadium. Hamstrings, though, have a way of hanging around, especially for a player who wins with speed and sharp movement.

McLaurin had hoped this season would be a reset after last year’s frustration, and his Week 3 showing against the Seattle Seahawks looked like the start of that. Instead, he’s run into another obstacle almost immediately.

If he can’t go against the Giants, then the clock starts ticking toward Monday Night Football against the San Francisco 49ers. If not then, the bye week becomes the next checkpoint.

All of this is arriving with bigger financial questions waiting down the road. McLaurin has two years left on his deal, with $34 million and $39.5 million counting against Washington’s salary cap. There’s no guaranteed money left, which is part of why Peters wanted the deal structured the way it was.

That setup gives the Commanders flexibility if they ever decide they need it. Trading or releasing McLaurin would be a last resort, at least next season, but the final-year number makes the future feel less certain than it once did.

He remains important to Washington. But in the NFL, that only goes so far.

Jayden Daniels Gives Commanders Hope With One Huge Question Still Lingering

Jayden Daniels was back on the practice field Wednesday and went through a full session after missing two games, a welcome development for a Commanders team that has been trying to navigate life without its rookie quarterback. Washington expects him to play against the New York Giants, and he is doing so with a brace on his elbow, a reminder that even his return comes with a degree of caution.

The bigger concern is what comes after this week. The Commanders still have not signed another quarterback, leaving Daniels as the clear centerpiece of the offense for now, even as there is lingering uncertainty about whether his elbow will need surgery after the season. For a team trying to stay competitive, getting him back matters, but so does whatever happens next with an injury that could follow him well beyond Sunday. [Read more 🡒]

Jayden Daniels Return Wont End This Commanders Problem

Jayden Daniels is set to return after missing two games with an elbow injury, which is obviously a lift for Washington as it tries to steady an offense that has been juggling injuries at a few spots. His presence alone changes the conversation at quarterback, and the Commanders are counting on that to help restore some rhythm after a stretch without him.

The wider issue, though, may still be at receiver, where Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs both missed practice with hamstring injuries. McLaurin has already sat out a recent game, and if both wideouts remain limited, Antonio Williams could keep seeing the heavier workload and targets that have made him a more important part of the passing game than anyone expected at this point. Jayden Daniels Return Comes With One Big Concern For Commanders Fans

Jayden Daniels is on track to return Sunday against the Giants after missing time with a left elbow injury, giving Washington the kind of lift it badly wanted as it gets back into a regular rhythm. He was a full participant in practice, a strong sign that the Commanders are moving toward getting their quarterback back on the field after a frustrating stretch on the sideline.

The lingering issue is not whether Daniels is close, but how he will feel once the game speed picks back up. Washington is still watching his recovery carefully to make sure he can function comfortably, and the team has not been shy about treating this as a step-by-step process. Dan Quinn said Daniels is expected to start if there are no setbacks, leaving the final bit of confirmation to the weekend itself. [Read more 🡒]
