Stefon Diggs’ first touchdown as a Commander came with a little too much flair, and now it has come with a price tag.
The NFL fined Washington’s new receiver $14,926 for jumping on the goalpost after his score against Philadelphia, classifying it as a first-offense unsportsmanlike conduct penalty under “illegal celebrations and vulgar acts.” NFL Network reported the number Saturday afternoon, and NBC Sports later matched it.
The moment happened last Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. With 9:59 left and the Eagles ahead 17-9, Jayden Daniels found Diggs for a 10-yard touchdown.
Diggs kept going, climbed the goalpost, and wrapped himself around it. The officials flagged Washington 15 yards, and that mattered right away.
Dan Quinn said afterward the Commanders would have gone for two to tie. Instead, Drew Stevens kicked the 48-yard extra point, and Washington trailed 17-16.
Philadelphia then answered with another touchdown. Washington got back in it with 1:01 remaining, but the final chance ended when a shovel pass to John Bates from the 2 failed. The Eagles won 24-22, exactly as Washington’s Week 1 recap laid out.
Diggs owned the mistake after the game. “As soon as I wrapped my arms around it, I was like, ‘Oh, I forgot,’” he told reporters, and he said he takes full accountability.
It was not the first time he had paid for a goalpost celebration, either. In 2017, Minnesota was fined $12,154 after Diggs hugged a goalpost against Washington.
Daniels didn’t pile on. “You just gotta be smarter,” he said, framing it as part of situational football. Quinn backed Diggs as a competitor but made the same point: that was a moment for discipline, not a celebration prop.
The fine itself won’t change much for Diggs financially. His one-year Commanders deal carries an $8 million cap number, $7.15 million guaranteed, and incentives that can push the total toward $12 million. A second unsportsmanlike conduct fine this season would rise to $20,897.
Diggs’ debut was uneven beyond the celebration. He finished with four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown on nine targets, but also had two drops.
Daniels went 18-of-34 for 164 yards and two touchdowns, adding five carries for 31 yards. He was 6-of-16 for 43 yards before halftime before settling in during the fourth quarter.
Now Washington heads to Dallas for a 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff at AT&T Stadium on FOX. Both teams are 0-1, with Dallas coming off a 28-20 loss to the Giants on Sunday night.
The Commanders will be without Frankie Luvu, who is out with a groin injury suffered late in the first half against Philadelphia. Tight end Chig Okonkwo is also out with a hamstring injury.
Quinn said Friday that neither player made it back, and Luvu’s absence matters because he wears the green dot. Rookie Sonny Styles handled that job after Luvu left the Eagles game.
Javon Kinlaw, dealing with a back injury, is questionable.
Washington also added help up front this week when Lucas Patrick signed to the 53-man roster. Patrick has 65 career starts at center and both guard spots over 10 seasons. Nick Allegretti started at center in Week 1.
Dallas has injuries of its own, with linebacker DeMarvion Overshown out with a hamstring injury and safety Malik Hooker out with a forearm injury.
The fine will be filed away. The 15-yard penalty is the part Washington cannot ignore. In a game that already figures to be tight, that kind of mistake can swing the entire script.
