Stefon Diggs Is Already Changing The Feeling Around Washington

Despite initial skepticism, Stefon Diggs has impressed the Washington Commanders with his leadership and camaraderie, winning over the locker room and dispelling his diva reputation.

Stefon Diggs has barely settled into Washington, but he’s already forcing a rewrite of the old narrative around him.

The Commanders brought in a receiver with a big name and plenty of baggage attached by outsiders, yet the early read from inside the building is that Diggs has been exactly what Washington hoped for. Veteran right guard Sam Cosmi offered the clearest sign of that shift, and his take leaves little room for doubt.

Speaking with JP Finlay and Washington legend Brian Mitchell on 106.7 The Fan, Cosmi described a player who has quickly become a voice in the offense and a steady presence around the room.

"He talks to the offense, trying to build up as he's rotating in. He's encouraging us to keep going, keep fighting, which has been a good thing to see.

He's very intelligent. When he knows the soft spots in coverages, when you hear him talking to Terry (McLaurin), it's been pretty cool to see."

That’s the kind of endorsement that carries weight. Cosmi isn’t just any teammate, either. He’s one of the more respected leaders on the roster, and his approval suggests Diggs has done more than simply show up and blend in.

Diggs arrived in Washington with a reputation that has long followed him, especially from earlier in his career, when he was often tagged as a diva and viewed as difficult when things weren’t going his way. But the Commanders are seeing something different. They had been in regular contact with him throughout the offseason, and once the deal came together, general manager Adam Peters landed him on what was described as a very team-friendly deal.

The outside noise about Diggs didn’t disappear when he signed, of course. It hung around long enough for teammates to watch closely and see how he handled himself.

So far, the answer has been encouraging. Head coach Dan Quinn had already heard positive things about Diggs’ leadership, including from his time with the New England Patriots last season, so this early impression lines up with what Washington expected.

For a player changing teams, that’s half the fight. Earn trust in the locker room and the rest becomes much easier. Diggs has done that quickly in Washington, and Cosmi’s comments only add to the sense that the Commanders have gotten a player who understands how to fit in and how to lift the people around him.

There’s always the possibility things could get tougher if the Commanders run into trouble, but that doesn’t seem like the story right now. Diggs is older in NFL terms, has been through plenty already, and appears to have brought that experience with him. He’s also chasing something personal with this move, a chance to play closer to home and make the most of it.

For now, the first impression has landed exactly the way Washington wanted.

Commanders Could Face A Costly Joey Porter Jr. Decision

The cornerback market is starting to feel a little more interesting, and Washington is right in the middle of it. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, multiple teams are keeping an eye on whether the Steelers might be open to moving Joey Porter Jr., a Pro Bowl-caliber defender who is entering the final year of his rookie deal. Pittsburghs cap situation has made the possibility at least worth monitoring, and any conversation would almost certainly begin with the kind of compensation that usually comes with a premium young corner.

For the Commanders, the appeal is obvious. Cornerback remains a need, and injuries have only sharpened the urgency of finding more reliable help on the back end. Porter would fit the profile of a player worth pursuing, but he would also come with a price tag that could force Washington to weigh immediate help against the cost of paying to get it. Jayden Daniels May Finally Have The Support Washington Needed

The Commanders spent the offseason reshaping the help around Jayden Daniels, and the changes start with the staff. Kliff Kingsbury is out as offensive coordinator, replaced by David Blough, who was promoted from assistant quarterbacks coach, and the move is being framed as a chance to better tailor the offense to Daniels strengths. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that Blough is expected to help Daniels maximize his abilities, particularly by leaning into the quarterbacks football IQ and his command at the line.

Washington has also tried to fortify the supporting cast, with free-agent receiver Stefon Diggs stepping into a leadership role alongside Terry McLaurin. Even with those additions, the bigger question still hangs over the offense: whether Daniels can stay healthy and whether the unit can hold up after losing starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil. Those are the kinds of variables that can decide whether all this support actually turns into progress. [Read more 🡒]

Commanders Have 3 Roster Races Fans Need To Watch Vs Lions

After a win over the Dolphins, the Commanders are turning their attention to their next preseason test against the Lions, and the roster picture is still taking shape. Dan Quinn said several starters are expected to play, though the exact plan has not been set, which should give this game a little more weight than a typical August tune-up for a team still sorting through the back end of the roster.

The most interesting eyes will be on the cornerback group without Trey Amos, the safety spot next to Nick Cross, and the race for the third wide receiver role behind Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs. Those jobs may not decide the season, but in a camp where every rep counts, this is the kind of game that can separate a candidate from the crowd and start to clarify who is really trending toward a spot.
