Stefon Diggs didn’t duck the moment after his costly penalty against the Eagles.
On Monday, the Commanders receiver spoke to his teammates and said he was wrong for drawing an unsportsmanlike penalty right after catching a touchdown from Jayden Daniels. That score pulled Washington within two points at 17-15, but the penalty wiped out the chance to go for two and tie the game. Instead, the Commanders had to line up for a 48-yard extra-point try, and Drew Stevens converted it to make it 17-16 Philadelphia.
The mistake left Diggs squarely in the spotlight, and he addressed it head-on when WUSA9 sports anchor Marshall Kramsky asked him about it Wednesday.
“My biggest thing was I am accountable,” conveyed Diggs. “I always admit I am human.
But I’m accountable way more than I am human. This is a team sport, and I feel like as a leader on this team I always want to win.”
He added, “If you really want to win, you want to do everything to put the team in a position to win...things happen; you try to move forward. I told them I was accountable; that was number one.
I just wanted to say it to the team. I don’t wanna brush anything under the rug.
I don’t want things to go unnoticed.”
That was the right move. Diggs didn’t make excuses, and he didn’t try to soften what happened. He owned the penalty and the missed chance it created for Washington.
By speaking up the way he did, Diggs also sends a message inside the locker room: mistakes happen, but they shouldn’t be hidden or waved away. That kind of honesty can matter in a team setting, especially when a player in a leadership role is the one taking responsibility.
