The Washington Commanders may have found something real in Sonny Styles.
In Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks, the rookie linebacker stepped into a much bigger role than anyone expected and delivered a performance that turned heads across the league. Washington was already short-handed without veteran Frankie Luvu, and then Leo Chenal was lost on a cart after suffering a fractured neck that will require season-ending surgery. That left Styles, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, to absorb the pressure and handle it fast.
He didn’t just hold up. He took over.
Styles wore the green dot and served as the traffic cop for the defense, making sure everyone was lined up and on time. Beyond the communication duties, he was a force in every phase: he got into the backfield, stayed disciplined against the run, and came through with strong coverage when Washington needed it most.

The Commanders needed someone to steady the ship, and Styles was everywhere. He gave Washington exactly the kind of presence a defense leans on when the game starts to tighten up. Seattle wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba was never going to be easy to contain completely, but Washington did better than most, and Styles was right in the middle of that effort.
For a player who drew some unfair heat for barely playing in the preseason, this was the kind of outing that changes the conversation. There’s already a noticeable comfort level in his game. The early lessons have clearly stuck, and he’s picking things up quickly.
Washington asked him to become an alpha sooner than expected, especially with Luvu and Chenal unavailable, and instead of buckling, he responded. The athleticism jumps off the screen.
The anticipation is there. His coverage awareness looks right where it should be, and his confidence seems to be growing by the week.
Just as important, the people around him already trust him. Coaches and teammates are looking to Styles when the moment gets big, and he’s answering.
That dynamic could shift a bit when Luvu returns, but Washington may also be seeing the start of something much bigger. If Styles keeps trending like this, the Commanders may have their next great linebacker on their hands.
