Washington Commanders rookie linebacker Sonny Styles got a welcome-to-the-NFL moment he won’t forget anytime soon, and it came from one of the best to ever play the position.
Fanatics surprised Styles with a message and gift from Luke Kuechly, the former NFL star linebacker who was recently inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The reaction landed right in the middle of Styles’ draft-night story, after he talked about how his football journey began when he was four years old. Then the room went dark, and a video from Kuechly appeared on the screen.
“Sonny, what’s up? Luke Kuechly here.
I just wanted to say congratulations, and I just wanted to say I’m pumped to watch your journey,” Kuechly begins. Styles immediately broke into a grin and shook his head as he tried to process what was happening.
Kuechly kept it simple and direct, telling the rookie, “Man, you just want to show that you belong, and show that you’re the guy that they thought when they drafted. You know how to do that; the best way to do that is just play your butt off.
And, with that being said, I want you to reach under your chair right now. I dropped a little something under there for you, and just wanted to say congratulations, a little memento, and welcome to the NFL, and I’m so excited to watch your career.”
Styles had already found the box waiting under his chair. Inside was a signed Carolina Panthers Luke Kuechly jersey.
“No way,” Styles laughs. “Yo, this is crazy.
No, I’m just grateful. I don’t know if Luke will see this, but I really appreciate it.
And it’s signed by him. You know, he’s one of the greatest to ever do it, so for him to make that video and give me this, it means a lot.
It says, ‘Sonny, so pumped to follow your career. Simplify the game.
Prepare. Play with unmatched energy plus toughness, and most of all, have fun.’
"I’m going to be holding onto this for a long time,” Styles laughs.
The clip ends with Styles holding up the jersey for the camera, Kuechly’s signature and message visible.
For the Commanders, the excitement around Styles is already obvious. He was drafted at No. 7 for a reason: he’s a rare athlete with a natural feel for the ball, plus the football IQ to read plays and adjust after the snap. He spent his early years as a safety before moving to linebacker during his college days at Ohio State, and his path to this point also includes growing up as the son of a former NFL player and playing alongside his brother Lorenzo, a cornerback currently signed to the New Orleans Saints.
The expectations are heavy, but so is the belief in what he can become. Styles has already shown he can handle what comes his way, and the next step is proving it at the NFL level.
The Commanders think they found a gem. Now the rookie has to show he belongs right where he landed.

The performance only got more interesting because rookie Kaytron Allen added 85 yards and a score of his own, and even credited Henry for helping him settle in.
