Sonny Styles Is Becoming A Bigger Deal For Washington Than Expected

After an electrifying showcase against the defending champions, Commanders linebacker Sonny Styles remains relentlessly focused on refining his game.

Sonny Styles made his presence felt in a big way Sunday, but the Washington Commanders linebacker wasn’t interested in treating it like some finished product.

In just his third NFL game, Styles turned in a stat line that jumped off the page: five tackles, two passes defensed, two forced fumbles, one interception and one quarterback hit. He also delivered one of the game’s sharpest defensive moments, matching Seattle running back Jadarian Price stride for stride down the sideline and knocking away what looked like a potential explosive play.

That performance helped Washington edge the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks 33-31 for the Commanders’ first win. Styles had a direct hand in two Seattle turnovers, and Washington cashed those takeaways in for 14 points. The Commanders don’t walk out of that game with a victory without him.

For Styles, though, the win mattered just as much as the numbers.

“I was glad to get a win,” Styles said. “I hate losing, like you said, didn’t really have too much in college.

But, you know, it’s the NFL; it’s a hard league. Every week, the teams are really good.

Even teams when you get deep in the season that have really bad records, they’re still a good team, so you’ve got to earn each and every win.”

Styles has also been trusted with the green dot for the second straight game with Frankie Luvu out, a sign of how much faith Washington has already placed in him. For a player this early in his career, he carried himself like someone who’s been running the defense for years.

And if the breakout outing had anyone thinking he’d be content, Styles quickly shut that down.

“I think there’s still more plays to be made,” he said. “I don’t think I’m anywhere near like where I want to be, so the emphasis for me is to just keep getting better each and every week.

I think you gotta be real with yourself, hard on yourself, but at the same time, like you said, third week playing in the NFL, so you gotta give yourself some grace too. But you know, I’m always looking to get better.”

That kind of mindset is exactly what Washington GM Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn want to see. Styles isn’t just making splash plays; he’s showing the kind of competitive edge that pushes everyone around him.

The Commanders may have found a rare defensive weapon in Styles, the kind of freakish athlete who can change a game on any snap.

Commanders London Game Sparks A Fan Backlash The NFL Didnt Need

The NFLs London trip for the Commanders and Colts was supposed to be another showcase for the leagues international push, but the conversation around the game has shifted to pricing and patience. Tickets were cut after sales slowed, a move that immediately rubbed some fans the wrong way, especially those who bought in early and now feel they paid a premium for the same seat.

Andy Burrows, the NFLs 2025 international fan of the year, publicly took the league to task for putting television presentation ahead of the live experience, a message that is landing because this is not a one-off stop. The NFL already has multiple London games on the calendar through 2029, but the softer demand around this matchup has raised a familiar question about whether the leagues global strategy is keeping pace with what fans overseas actually want. Brandon Aiyuk Just Reignited Washingtons Strangest Offseason Story

Brandon Aiyuk has a way of keeping Washington in the conversation, even when he is nowhere near the building. The San Francisco 49ers receiver, who is currently on the reserve/left squad list, posted a video celebrating the Commanders first win of the season, adding another twist to a connection that has lingered all offseason.

Aiyuk has already made it clear he would like to play for Washington, and he has been spotted wearing the teams gear while also maintaining a friendship with quarterback Jayden Daniels. The wrinkle, of course, is that the Commanders moved on by signing Stefon Diggs, leaving Aiyuk on the outside of a roster picture that still feels oddly unfinished. [Read more 🡒]

Commanders Face Another Lineup Test Before London Kickoff

The Commanders are heading into their London trip with a little more roster churn than they probably wanted, as the club ruled out right guard Sam Cosmi and safety Nick Cross for Sundays game and said neither player will make the trip. On top of that, Washington added outside linebacker Charles Snowden to the practice squad, a small but notable move as the team keeps sorting through depth before kickoff overseas.

The transaction log also brought more movement at linebacker and in the backfield picture, with Marvin Jones Jr. landing on the practice squad injured list and Leo Chenal going on Reserve/Injured. Washington also made the signing of Austin Ekeler official, another reminder that the Commanders are still piecing together their lineup as they prepare for one of the more unusual weeks on the schedule.
